Pubs in Kitchen street, Liverpool 1890-1911ish and map.
« on: Friday 08 January 10 10:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi everybody and Happy New Year!

I'm currently trying to find the name of the pub my gggrandmother Mary O'Grady/Manley (nee Dunlop) ran around this period of time. A relative on the same hunt sent me this rather fascinating map:

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/mapsheet.aspx?compid=55207&sheetid=10194&ox=2131&oy=2746&zm=1&czm=1&x=376&y=265

Can anybody name the three pubs? They lived at various addresses in Kitchen Street but mostly at number 6.

Thanks in advance!

The pub at top right of the map: 1 o'clock, probably the King's Arms, 28 St James St, cnr of Kitchen St.  Stephen McGrath was tenant in 1909 when it was owned by Peter Walker, later by Higsons.  There were three licensees between 1/1/1900 and 1909.

At 2 o'clock, Royal Vaults, 1 Bridgewater St, cnr of St James's St.  Manager William Pitcairn Sutherland, owners Harding & Parrington, later Walker Cain.  There is a photo of this pub in "A Pub on every Corner" Vol. 1, Lpool, City Centre, by Freddy O'Connor.

Central:  37 Bridgewater St, cnr Simpson St [the map has this wrong as Sampson!] - White Cat, T.Lloyd tenant.

All this from the City of Liverpool Licensing Book for 1909, the only copy I have, but there is more information in the Liverpool Record Office.

Thanks Ainslie,

A very informative reply! Looks like the King's Arms is the most likely candidate. Apparently poor Mary's husband was an alcoholoic and drank away the business and they lost the pub and her savings.

Thanks again, I'll plan a visit to the record office next time I visit Liverpool.

Best wishes,

Jenni

There's also the Dolphin at the corner of Chaloner Street and Kitchen Street. Licensee in 1894 was Mrs Margaret Park.

Mary was born around 1872. I'm wondering if her pub career was bit later than the 1891-1911 period. In 1901 she's at 3 Kitchen Street ( I think) with husband Thomas who is a dock labourer, and their children. Have you found her in the 1911 census?
