Birth/bapt record - MEGICKS
« on: Thursday 07 January 10 16:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello - i am desperate for the birth/bpt record of my ancestor James Megicks born abt 1774 in Oxford. he married mary ward in 1798 and was a property owner in water lane. he was a hair dresser and left a will but i can't find any birth record and can't get to the record office.

All Megicks in Britain are decended from this man so it would be nice to find out were he was from or any other info. he may have changed his name from Magick or something else.

Thanks

Looking at freebmd and also censuses - the surname Megicks seems to be predominant in Wales - not England

Where did you get the info from that he was from Oxford

There are a lot of Megicks in Wales, my grandfather, g. grandfather and g.g. grandfather were born in wales. i have traced all the megicks in wales from 1901 backwards and they are all descended from James megicks born in oxford, his son also called James moved to Lampeter when the University was established.

Hi

Quote

So you presumably have James snr on a census showing his birthplace - can you give the reference as I cannot find him in 1841/51

Sorry I obviously have not provided enough information nor clarified what i'm trying to request this is the first time i have been on the site. my family tree is on ancestry.co.uk.

James Megicks/Majicks/Magicks was born abt 1774 and died in 1832 in Oxford. I have his marriage record and the birth records of his 4 daughters and 1 son, all in oxford. I have his will and probate, and the 1830 poll of the freeholders for the knights of the shire. I also have a lease for property in Oxford.

the oxford family history society cannot find any birth records in oxfordshire and it apears he either changed his name or he came from somewhere else. i am after any ideas about tracing this mans birth or where he came from, directories, registers etc.

i can't get to the record office

Hello
I have a tree on Ancestry.co.uk, you may be able to email me in private on ancestry, then we can exchange emails without everyone picking up the address. My tree is called Hurrell Family Tree.
