George Goddard - Lost at sea

Hi

I have a note from my father (now deceased) that states that his Grandmothers father Captain George Goddard was lost at sea in a gale off Tristan da Cunha

His daughter went into service as a result of the loss of her father. This was before she was married in 1881. I believe the daughter was not her real father, but maybe her brothers child. Her name was Alice Selina Goddard, born in Chelsea in 1859

Therefore, I am assuming that Captain George Goddard was lost at sea somewhere between 1871 and 1881 although I am guessing. Does anyone know of any boats lost near Tristan da Cunha in this period?

Alice Selina Goddard was married in Tynemouth in 1881 to Joseph Ingram Forster whose family come from Westoe. Prior to her being being married she was confirmed at St Hilda's Church in South Shields

Hence I posted her in the hope that someone may know something of Captain George Goddard. Am happy to move this if there is a better board to post on.

I cant remeber the dates of the Marine Death Registers - but they are on FindMyPast I believe.
That would be th efirst place to look.

I have very sketchy details

Alice Selina calls George Goddard her father on her wedding certificate. But it would appear Thomas Goddard was her father on her birth certificate. Thomas never married Alice Selina' mother, instead marrying someone else and running off to Australia. So Alice Selina spent several years in Chelsea London from 1859 when sh was born to 1878 when I know she was confirmed in St Hilda's Church South Shields. George Goddard I have never found any record of at all, no cencus returns, but on Alice Selina's wedding certificate he is known as a Mariner. Interestingly, Thomas Goddard was a butcher in the Mercantile Marine on Alice Selina's birth certificate

Alice Selina and Joseph Forster appear in the 1891 census and I think Alice Selina is in Service as a cook in Tynemouth in 1881

The Mothers name is Louisa Maidment

Fathers name is Thomas Marsh Goddard on the birth certificate
