So it could be south of the river ???
I will have another look at keys to the past.

Thanks everyone for all the work you are doing on my behalf.
In the Bishop's Transcripts Bywell begins with Bywell St Andrew and on image 171 goes to Bywell St Peter.  Page for 1793 baptism of William is missing but some of his family members are on other pages, for example image 210 sister Margaret.
The farm index is very interesting even if it doesn't have my place on it.  I didn't know it existed.  So thanks for that also.  I'm sure it will come in handy in the future.

I can't yet see anything on the old maps that looks anything like it.
Next time I slide down the hill to the library I'll see if I can find anything in the Local Studies collection that might give a clue.

I have scanned the 1854 map north to south as well as east to west and nothing.
I think everyone will be sliding these next few days Jennifer. A temperature of -4 here was the daytime high.

Brilliant!

I had searched addresses in Bywell St. Peter in 1841, but it didn't show up on there.

Sue, if you want to see the exact location, go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/intermap/viewer.htm, click on search at the top of the page, and then enter the postcode Peter gave - NE43 7RJ.
This will centre the map on Redshawfoot. You can then look at the older maps by using the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page.
