McKeowns 1878
« on: Wednesday 06 January 10 15:24 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find a Patrick McKeown, coal miner, residing at 25 Dixons Street, Blantyre, in 1880.

He was taken to the Hamilton Sheriff Court to prove paternity of Mary Ann McKeown, born 1878.

There are a few Patrick McKeowns in the area at that time. Has anyone heard of an illegitimate child? The child's mother was Elizabeth Stevenson.

Greetings Sarah,
Mary Ann Mckeown Born 1878, three  in Hamilton, and one in Blantyre.
Patrick McKeown, 1881 Census one in Hamilton, and one in Blantyre.
This information is on Scotlandspeople, it is worth subscribing to, or ,
maybe some of the Rootschat Friends here may have some spare credits and confirm this for you.(I have run out :'()
With regard to illigitimate child, this discription can be found on the childs birth certificate for that period in time, and much later, hope this helps.

There's a Patrick McAnn (as transcribed by Ancestry) in 1881 showing as living at 25 Dixon Street Blantyre. Aged 24, lodging in the household and a coal miner by occupation. Born in Ireland.

The problem with the 1881 census is that there is not original image to look at. Scotlands People offer you two transcripts to look at for 1881 - might be worth checking on the spelling of the surname as SP's transcription is likely to be more accurate.

Thanks!

I had the census info for the Stevensons - that is the correct family. It was really sad - the father died in a mining accident (age 36) and less than two years later the daughter has an illigitimate child. I'm trying to find more of their story.

I'll have to look into Patrick McAnn though. That sounds likely.

Thank you so much!
