CHRISTIE - Beath
« on: Monday 04 January 10 14:27 GMT (UK) »
My 6x gf Andrew Christie died (probably happily) in the Foulford Tavern in Beath.
He was born in 1781 and died in 1865.  Is there anyone out there who knows where this tavern was situated?  Have tried lots of sites.  Also any one with connections pls let me know.

hi & welcome to RC.
the tavern on Foulford Road is called the Kirkford Tavern and i suspect is the one mentioned as his place of birth.
by the way - have you seen the death entry on SP - fabulous writing!!

you can google the Kirkford tavern and see the location.

There were a lot of pubs in Cowdenbeath!  I can't think of a Foulford Tavern, but Wee Jimmies on the High Street used to be the Foulford Arms so that's another option if the name is slightly wrong, or changed over the years.  It definitely existed  ~1900 but not sure about earlier.  Another Tavern in the Foulford Road/Street area is the Glen Tavern.

This is great! Thanks to both Diddy and Joyce for very quick replies.  Certainly take those enquiries further and must get the hang of this site as it promises to be a terrific help.  I've got loads of queries to post for other parts of my family - Christies, Downies of Fife, Mathieson, Stenhouse, Lyndsay, Davie, Moodie, Davie, Greig - just have to figure out how to get all the information out there.  Probably be able to look up info for others at some point in the future too.
Also have queries about Irish side of family, Connollys in Monaghan, O'Hares in Antrim(?), Timmon(s) in Cavan.
Better stop there!  Could be here all night!
Thanks again.
Cecilia

Are you from Fife or trying to trace family who lived in the area?  My mothers family were miners in this part of Fife.   Do you have any further information about the occupation of your 6x gf as the majority of the people who moved to or lived in the area were miners?  I have attached a few links which might help.

Thanks Carrie for the links - will search through them.  My family were not miners - the Andrew Christie who died in 1865 was a farmer at Hatchbank, his son Andrew was a Carter, who had John who was a baker in Kirkcaldy, who had Andrew who became a master baker in Edinburgh, who had my father, Adam.
I am, though, very interested to see that you have an O'Hare connection.  My paternal grandmother was Ellen O'Hare who was born in Edinburgh to Edward O'Hare (born in Ireland, but where I don't know) and Alicia Sands (also born in Ireland).  I am 90% sure Edward came over and worked in Lanarkshire for a while before settling in Edinburgh.  Any connection here?  Nice to hear from you.  Regards

Hi Sticky Toffee,

You didn't state when your Alicia Sands was born but didn't know if you had looked in the Ireland Census of 1901.  It makes quite interesting reading.  It is really a shame that the records before this census are really vague.  Could the above link possibly lead you to your Alicia Sands?  If you click on the 'Show More Information' box then you will see that both listed were widows and the head of the household.  I would be interested to know if she is one of the 2 who were listed.  As for your Your Edward O'Hare, I think you could be looking for a while as there were loads of them listed.  I will keep in touch to see if there is a link between your family and mine.  I know that the O'Hear / O'Hair / O' Hare family went to America (Boston I think) in the 1930's and I also think that they may hold the key the where in Ireland the family originated from.  I have sent a message to someone on Facebook as a longshot but have not had a reply as yet.  (Won't hold my breath on that one but you never know!!)  I feel that I would probably get more information if I registered in Ancestry for the full package as this gives you gobal access to overseas records including passenger lists and Naturalisations in USA.  I may sign up to this when I am feeling a bit more flush and the trail starts to dry up.  Good luck with your search anyway.
