Leicester Borough Lunatic Asylum
« on: Monday 04 January 10 09:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can assist, an ancestor Ellen Taylor aged 64 years died in the Leicester Borough Lunatic Asylum, later known as the Towers in October 1905 is there any way I can find further details such as when she was admitted. The death cert also gives her husband as - Taylor but no first name I would be most grateful for any assistance, Thanks, Sharon

Hi,

 :)

I would contact the Records Office at Leicestershire County Council and ask what records they have.

http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/community/recordoffice.htm

I had an ancestor who died in Lancaster Lunatic Asylum and the Lancashire Records Office had the records and they managed to find his medical records for me so it is worth pursuing.

Regarding the first name of Ellen's husband, I think you need to find the marriage certificate.  Do you know her maiden name?  May be you can trace them back on the census?  If you need any help, I know you will find it on Rootschat.

Thanks I will try that, I have the husbands name from the marriage cert. Just wanted to ensure it was the right Ellen Taylor but they seem to have had a very turbulent marriage so may be why she didnt give his name, Thanks again, Sharon

Hi There,
someone else has a similar query on the Leics Board here. it seems the Towers records are not 'in good shape' and may not be available. but still worth trying - it may depend on the date.

I have copies of admission records for a couple of people into the Towers - one was in 1869, when it opened (she was one of the first batch of people to be moved there from Carlton Heys, I think) and the other was an acute admission from home in 1890.

So some of the Towers records are in good nick. I can't remember though how I found them, other than by asking to see the original book which the records office staff fished up from the vaults for me! But I don't remember if there was any index - I rather think I just had to trawl through the pages until I found the relevant names - I guess I was lucky.

Hi

Sorry to interject. I also have an ancester, Theodore Taylor, who d there in April 1882. He must have been admitted after 1881 as he was recorded living in the Leicester Union Workhouse, Sparkenhoe, Leicester in the 1881 C.

I am very concerned to read about his circumstances and would v much like to know how/why they occurred

His brother Isaac also seems to have ended his days at the Leicester Workhouse, Leicester in 1901
