Sorley Sorlie how they were in Perthshire
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 23:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks.
Can anyone help me with this query,as it is driving me nuts.
I have traced my family back to Wester fowlis near Crieff, where
they were for many generations.
My great great great grandfather was John sorlie, married to
Mary Barclay in 1804 in Fowlis Wester, now I think his parents were
Patrick Sorlie and Ann Dow married in same place in 1783 but I am
not certain. Some where down the line the spelling changed to Sorley.
What I need to know is when did all the Sorlie / Sorleys come to
Perthshire and from where,as the name is connected to Camerons
of Glen Nevis and also the clan Lamont and clan Donald.
Hope someone can help.

You have to remember that the spelling never 'changed to' anything. The spelling you find for a name in the historical records will be the spelling the writer (clerk/minister/registrar, etc.) thought was the spelling of that name (the name as he heard it/interpreted it/spelled it ....)

Have you seen the following page on the Visit Rannoch website (http://www.visitrannoch.com/clan-cameron.htm) which mentions the McSorlies?

Thanks to eilthireach for your response but I already knew
why names sometimes change.  The main query was which clan
the Sorleys of Fowlis Wester came from and when did they arrive
in the Crieff area.
I have checked the Rannoch website mentioning the Macsorleys
but it does not help connect our family for sure as we are also
associated with clan Donald and Lamont.
Ruari.

I know it's slightly a bit off the topic, but I stumbled on your post.

I have a few Sorlie's in my Crerar family tree from the Methven and Fowlis Wester area in Perthshire.

Thomas Sorlie born about 1797 (no parents listed as of yet)
who married Catherine Halley in 1818.

I wonder Thomas is connected to your Sorlie family.

Thomas and Catherine had 3 children: John, Catherine and Elizabeth.
I am distantly related to Catherine, she married John Crerar in Fowlis Wester.

From what I have tracked they stayed in the Methven area.

Thanks,
Aislynn

The main query was which clan the Sorleys of Fowlis Wester came from and when did they arrive in the Crieff area.

The earliest mention of Sorlies in the Fowlis Wester OPRs is a marriage in 1708, but there is a Sorlie marriage elsewhere in Perthshire in the 1650s.

When your family in particular moved there you will only discover if you can trace your line back further I suppose.

There is a will on SP for a Patrick Sorlie In Easter Lethendy, Parish Of Crieff 1769. Is he one of yours?

Thanks to Kirsty and Aislynn for your replies,
Patrick Sorlie is definitely one of mine but still not sure
about Thomas. I think that all the Sorlies from Perthshire
are related in some way, and I now have an expert helping
me with the search.
Thanks again,

Ruari.

Hello,
I have an Isobel Sorlie married to James Gowans in Perth, Perthshire in 1790.  A daughter of theirs (Christian Gowans) married Peter Fisher in Muthill in 1822. Isobel Sorlie's father was Peter Sorlie born 1734 in Monzie, Perthshire.  I missed several of the Sorlie children until I learned that it was misspelled Loreley.  Someone had a list of about 20 different spellings for the names.  Confusing, I'm sure.

Good point Ruth, never thought about the dodgy spelling.
I only checked the two usual spellings, I will go and try a few
other likely sounding Sorley variations
Thanks,
Ruari
