Hyland/Maher family
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 18:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Does any one have any information on the Hyland family in County Laois c. 1800's.  I am researching William Hyland who married Mary?.  I have found a 1799 birth record for William in Aghaboe RC parish indicating the townland of Kilcotten .  I also have found some census records of their children from their immigration to England.  The children that I have identified are Thomas, Joseph, Bridget, Eliza and Mary.  I suspect their eldest child was Patrick.

William's child Joseph married Mary Maher in England in 1853.  Mary's father's name was John Maher.  Although my knowledge of the Maher family is limited it is possible that the Maher's were also from Queens County.

Any information regarding these families would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I really appeciate your help.  I have really hit a brick wall on both the Hyland and Maher family.  I do have some information coming from Australia that I'm hoping will give some leads.

Thanks so much for your response.  It seems that all roads lead to Abbeyleix.  It seems to hold true for both the Hyland and Maher families.  Do you know of any resources for Abbeyleix that I can acccess ?

Apart from the websites mentioned above which have lots of data based resources, you could try contacting the Abbeyleix Heritage Centre.. i do not have their contact details but you may find them on the website abbeyleix.ie. There is also a recent facebook page on Abbeyleix that perhaps you could post a message on there. Hope that is of some help.

Hi Cindy. We may have corresponded before. My Gr.gr. grandfather James Hyland is listed in Griffiths Valuation (1849 in Laois) in Kilbeg/Kylebeg,Aghaboe.Also listed is Martin Hyland in Kilbeg.Probably a son.In the 1826 tithe applotment books for Aghaboe, found on line the name Hyland is entered as  Heelan. This was the local vernacular. As a boy vacationing there 60 years ago,I was introduced to a local, as Tim Heelans son. This puzzled me until the penny dropped.Keep it in mind for your research. Those listed in the Tithes are James Heelan/Kyletilloge,Michael Heelan/Park,Nicholas Heelan/Kilcotton and Patrick Heelan/Boherard.
