Edward Rothwell WW1

Hi all,
 After my help recently which you all gave I decided to rejoin ancestry and have found out loads of new information about my great grandad and wifes great grandad who both now have service records online which they didnt previously!! Brilliant!!
I do have various questions about their records but will post them at a later date.

What I am now looking at is my wifes other great grandand. He was Edward Rothwell born in 1899 in ramsbottom lancashire. I have all his census information about where he lived, jobs etc but I have a puzzleing thing on his sons birth certificate.
In 1918 on John Monks Rothwells birth certificate his rank/profrssion is stated as private in the 11th batt:suffolk regiment(cashier at a bleach works)
I have looked on ancestry and can only find one edward rothwell in the suffolk regiment No:37246.
My question is that all the information I have on him is in the ramsbottom/Bury area so how would he end up in the Suffolk Regiment? would it be his choice?
Also can I find any other information out about his service and war exploits.

Finally it is also thought that John Monks Rothwell was an officer in ww2 in the royal artillery. Can I find any information out about him ie his regiment number etc or would i just have to send off for his service record and pay the 30.00 with what little sketchy information we have and would this be worth it?

By the latter stages of the war men who were conscripted were sent wherever there was a need, so men frequently ended up in Regiments that had little or no connection with their birthplace.

In addition to what JDS said if the regiment they were with got pretty much wiped out at any stage quite a few of the men got posted to other Regiments who needed people at that stage.
