Attempted Bigamy
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 16:48 GMT (UK) »
Family rumour has it that a member may have attempted bigamy and been arrested for it (not sure if charges were ever brought).  Is there any website or similar that I can search regarding bigamy or attempted bigamy?  I am not certain of the county that the attempt took place otherwise I would target this area first.

Many thanks

Julie

Julie - I don't think one website would have everything. As ever, it will depend on date and place. Also was the same name used or a false name - were they found out or not?

If you're referring to England or Wales there are some court records at the National Archives for bigamy and for divorce (not for all dates). You may find a report in the newspapers - the Times archive can be accessed via many libraries; the Guardian & Observer archive is also online - both can be searched without charge, but you would need to pay/or use a library access to see the detail of any results.

Julie, about when did this occur?

Sounds like a "Jane Eyre" scenario ::)

I am not sure that you can be arrested for attempted bigamy.  Possibly if some other crime was attempted like fraud then an arrest my have taken place.  Otherwise surely the marriage would just have not taken place.

Dear All, thank you for your many replies, I am really grateful.  The attempted bigamy would have been during 1930s.  I will give the Times online a go but don't hold out much hope with the National Archive, 5 minutes on their website has me in a rage!

Many thanks

I have two men on my family tree who both seem to have married 3 times in the same church, while the first wife was still alive. Both were in the late 1700's. Both remarried quite a short time after the first marriage, as if the first had just not worked out.

I wondered if the church allowed amicable separations in some cases, but if so I don't think it was properly legal.

Anyone have similar experiences?
