Jonas Mitchell and Bessie Hall
« on: Sunday 03 January 10 15:51 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace any marriage details for my gt gt grandparents, Jonas Mitchell born 1840 Bradford to Bessie Hall c1855 Tankersley. It was Jonas's second marriage, his first being to Hannah Raistrick. After Hannah's death in 1887 it is thought a marriage took place between Jonas and Bessie in c1889, but I can't find any records. I am also trying to find any info on Bessie Hall. Can anybody help?
Regards Jill

Hi and welcome to rootschat
Can you give a census reference for your particular Jonas?  I am suprised at how many there are.   There is one in 1881 married to Hannah with children John Thomas, George G and Sarah Ann.   Is that the one? Rg11 4442 5 4  500 Leeds Rd Bradford.

Hi, thanks yes that is the right family. That was Jonas with his first wife Hannah. I managed to find census records except the 1911 one, it's more proof of a marriage and info on Bessie Hall that I am struggling with. I do appreciate all help though.
Thanks Jill

So you have Jonas and Bessie in 1891 and 1901?  Can you give us the references?  It helps if you can be more specific about what you have and what you want so then we know where to start.  We can't do 1911 look ups for copyright reasons but there are plenty of hints for searching the free index.

In 1891 they have a young Jonas H age 6 months with them and Elizabeth is age 36 and born in Wakefield.   You would be able to confirm her maiden name by getting the birth certificate for Jonas.  The entry shows on www.freebmd.org.uk
By 1901 Bessie is age 42 and born Tankersley, Yorks.  Another son Wiliam H is age 9.
They remain at the same address 500 Leeds Rd so it should be possible to try an address search in 1911 to see if they are still there.

Hi again Jill :)

You have Elizabeth/Bessie's surname as Hall, is this confirmed by certificate?

Just wondering as I found a marriage  between Jonas Mitchell and either Esther Elizabeth Hillman or Sarah Annie Ratford in Bradford 9b 116, Sep 1/4 1889.

I looked at that too and it does seem to be the only possible marriage in the right time frame.

Thanks to you both. Jonas and his first wife Hannah had three children, John Thomas 1867, George Goodwin 1869 and Sarah Ann 1872. Jonas and Bessie had three children, Jonas Hall 1890, Willis Hall 1893, (my gt grandfather) and John Hall 1898, (Hall being their middle name). They lived at 500 Leeds Road and then 566 Leeds Road. Jonas was a general dealer, cabinet maker, greengrocer and a broker. (Jack of all trades by the look of things)!!! I managed to get a copy of Jonas Hall Mitchell stood outside the shop at 566 Leeds Road, amazing.
I also found the marriage details of Jonas and an Esther Elizabeth Hillman, but on the census and Jonas's death certificate she is Bessie Mitchell Also on Willis's birth it states mother Bessie Mitchell formerly Hall.
On the 1891 census she is Elizabeth and from Wakefield which is incorrect, also Jonas is from Nannerch???? should be Bradford.
I have just found a Betsy Hall christened 1/4/1855 Tankersley, father Isaac Hall and mother Alice, on familysearch which sounds promising.
