WILLIAM BISSEL OR BISSELL WIGAN 1911
« on: Saturday 02 January 10 19:55 GMT (UK) »
Is there anyone researching the Bissel or Bissell family that resided in Wigan around 1911.Although not directly related to me but a William Bissel or Bissell married my grandmother(Lily Fillingham b1891 Wigan) in 1911 but was killed at Gallipoli in 1915.They had 2 boys born in 1911 and 1914 and unfortunately the children died in 1914 and 1917 respectively. When married they lived at 5 Wigan Road Aspul.I think the Bissel(L) family originated from the West Midlands possibly Dudley. The family was in Wigan in 1901 but cannot find them prior to that.Any help would be appreciated.Below id the info on William Bissel(l).
Lance Corporal William Bissell of the 6th Batallion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, service no 11498.  Died aged 26 9th August 1915.  Husband of Lily Robson (formerly Bissel), of 31 Duchess St, Bulwell, Nottingham

I know this is not going to help but there is a VERNON BISSELL born 1866 living at 37 Wigan road, late 1910 to early 1912.Not sure what sort of a dwelling it is ?

Thanks for the info,I have arranged for a photo to be sent to me,that makes a couple of more bits of the puzzle.Regards Vernon Bissell it is possible he is a relative of William as I cannot find any mention in the census of the Bissell family before 1901 in Wigan and I would imagine in those days moving a whole family accross country would need someone in the know in the area you were moving too so you could walk into a job and get housing.Anyway my hunt for the Bissell family pre 1901 will continue.

Thanks again

The 2 named Bissell are the 2 children I mentioned,my grandmothers 2 children with William Bissel. The Jane and William Fillingham are my Great Grandparents and I think Samual is Williams Brother,Something also tells me that the Mears name is one of William Fillinghams Grandchildren.I did not have this info so that someting else that you have provided me with.I did try Wiganworld a couple of years ago but got no response, thanks for reminding me about it as I will try again.I have registered with the website you mentioned

Might be worth asking nicely on here and Wigan world, if any one would be so kind to check if there is a headstone in that cemetery and photograph it for you? I am sure any Rootschaters that side of town would love to do it first.
I would also check there is no other grave/ headstone in the same cemetery before asking as you might get some one to do them all in one go. That is if you don't have them allready?
Am still looking on the census for William for you, but not much luck.

Hi, are you a member of Genes Reunited?  If so, there are quite a few William Bissells on various trees on that site and several from Dudley.

Funnily enough, I don't live too far away from where William lived!

One thing I did forget to mention is that William Bissell's name appears on the war memorial in Wigan, does this have any relevance as to where he was born or was it because he lived in Wigan.
