Happy new year to all of you :)
This is one of the first times Ive ventured to this area of the u.k,so be gentle with me!my wish has been granted, and im over to your sunny shores for the first time ever! mid year.
im hoping to finallly find a charge record for a female covict tried in 22 july 1799,at croydon.
we all love sarah in our tree, but finally..Im on a mission to see what she was convicted for myself, and a journey to scotland to rattle a few trees and see what falls out!
please would someone know where one woud start to find such...if exsists!
Any tips, suggestions  would be great.....cheers from chrissyxx

Hi

The Ancestry indexes on criminal registers 1791-1892 aren't really clear what actual counties and dates are covered.
The indexes are based on the classes of records held at The National Archives HO26 for the county of Middlesex 1791-1849 and HO27 which covers all England and Wales except Middlesex before 1849. HO27 covers the period 1805-1892 in the indexes.

Consequently Surrey and indeed all counties except Middlesex are not covered by this series of records pre 1805.

I would suggest reading The National Archives research guides on what records are available that would help your search

Hi Kerry,

Have you tried the Australian Joint Copying Project records available in Australia?   I presume you are in Australia at the moment.  See website http://www.nla.gov.au/collect/ajcp.html

There are 8 or 9 guide books on what has been copied and deposited on films with the National Library in Canberra.   The AJCP includes a lot of convict records of British convicts sent to Australia and you may find the same information from the AJCP films in Australia that is available in England.  Most large libraries and family history centres in Australia hold copies of the Guide Books and can order in the films on inter library loan for a very modest fee - much less expensive than ordering the information from the National Archives in England ;) ;).

Also try Genuki under Sussex  http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/SSX/#CourtRecords and the English newspapers online as they often reported on trials  http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/17043438?selectedversion=NBD24209369.

Might also be worth contacting Surrey History Centre to see whether they have any records of the summer assizes from 1799 (alternate years were held in Croydon and Kingston) or any local papers which might have covered the trial. http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsite/sccwspages.nsf/LookupWebPagesByTITLE_RTF/Contacting+Surrey+History+Centre?opendocument
