Hi adamthomas,

It looks like Mary Ann Knowles (she was only named as Marshall on a census return - which doesn't really prove anything) was illegitimate -so you may not discover who her father is.

Where does the name Mary Murrell come from???

The children on 1841 census with George Marshall and Jane are not all necessarily their children as no relationships are given on 1841 census.

1851 census gives george as their son and he would have left home by 1861

I'll look for him shortly

I think I have discovered where you went wrong.
Did you think the marriage in 1848 Farnborough district was George Marshall to Mary Murrell???

If you look at the names on the same page they are
George marshall
George Skeate
James Bajent
John Cobbbett
mary Murrell
Eleanor Antrobus
Louisa Harmsworth
Sarah Elizabeth parke

It seemsd this George marshall (b farnborough) married Sarah Elizabeth parke (b Yately)

so this is not "your" George

that makes more sense! thanks. i was wondering where i had Murrell from, it now seems like George married Jane and then had 3 children, he then married Mary Knowles who already had a daughter Mary Ann outside of marriage.

George Marshall bapt 21 Feb 1813 married Charlotte Aldred 13 Oct 1835.  He is my 3 X Gt Grandfather. We know it was this George as his abode is the same as Sister Harriett .He was convicted 18 Oct 1847 at Winchester for two thefts of Wheat and sentence to 7 years Transportation. He arrived in Van Dieman'S Land & Norfolk Island in 1850 and that is where he remained dying in Hobart 03 Sep 1880 of cancer. His Wife Charlotte bigamously married Edward Shrubb some 15 years her junior in Farnborough Register Office 17 Nov 1866. We Know it is this George from the Transportation papers which list's his wife as Charlotte, and siblings Thomas, William & Richard and Sisters Harriet, Lucy, Mary & A.N. Other (Unreadable). It is interesting that he list's a brother's as William. From the list of siblings we can tell his Parents are John & Anne, however there were 2 John Marshall's of Headley at that time,  both married to Anne's, One is Anne Spooner, the other was not married in Headley and maiden name remains a mystery. Neither John though baptised a son William, however Anne Spooner had a baseborn son William one year before she married a John Marshall. As this was before civil registration none of us Marshall descendants from a John & Anne. will ever know for sure which family they came down from :-)
