George King abt 1806 - look up please
« on: Thursday 31 December 09 22:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me please. I am trying to locate George King b1806, i have managed to trace him back to the 1841 census but am at a loss as how to go back any further.

I would like to find out when he married Jane, she came from South Inksey, Berkshire.

If poss i would also like to know who George's parents were.

Many thanks

Have you any more details. Where was George born? Or where did they get married?

Thank you both.

Toby,

George was born abt 1806 in Horsepath, Oxfordshire, i am not sure if they married in South Hinksey, Berkshire or Horsepath, i do know that their first born was born in South Hinksey in 1835, and the next born in 1840 was Horsepath.

Hope this helps, and thank you.

Shazzie
Lets go back to your original question about where to go next. But I don't want to appear to be teaching you to suck eggs!!

1. You could try an on line request in here for a look up of the Parish Records -there are some very very knowledgeable folks on here.
2. OFHS members may do a search for a small fee
3. You can buy the PR's on CD from OFHS
4. Visit the Oxford Records at St Lukes, Cowley, Oxford
5. Visit the OFHS nr Wheatley
6. Visit the Oxford Library in The Westgate, Oxford
7. Have a look through later census for a possible name of a father or mother or brother in law living with your family. You may get Jane's maiden name from there and possibly from a person listed as a sister in law but that person mat have got married and using her new name. Later in life elderly parents lived with their children as much then as now?
8. You may have to buy B/M/D certificates - which can prove expensive especially as you don't appear to have much original info to go on.
9. Have a look on some on line sites e,g Ancestry, Free BMD, Find My Past -there are loads of varying quality /use
10. Visit church grave yards and get clues from graves
11. Trawl through family documents, book, bibles, photos for clues

I have had a quick look on Ancestry and there is a tree on there with George B 1906 Horspath  already on there?
On Free BMD there is a George King marrying in 1839 Reg Oxford Q2 v16 p133 and one of the names listed on that page is Jane CRIPPS? Possibly a bit late for you but perhaps the 1st child you speak of was born out of wedlock - not unusual.

In the 1861 census (Class: RG9; Piece: 889; Folio: 106; Page: 19; GSU roll: 542717).
George and Jane have 3 children
Charles B 1846, George B 1850 Joseph B 1857 -all born Horspath

In the 1851 Census (Class: HO107; Piece: 1727; Folio: 90; Page: 6; GSU roll: 193636).
George and Jane have
Ann 1835 South Hinksey
Charlotte 1840 Horspath
Emma 1844 Horspath
Charles 1846 Horspath
George 12 weeks Horspath so as the 1851 census was taken the night of 31 March I expect he was born at the end of Dec 1850

In the 1841 Census (Class: HO107; Piece 877; Book: 3; Civil Parish: Horsepath; County: Oxfordshire; Enumeration District: 5 4 1; Folio: 3; Page: 2; Line: 3; GSU roll: 474573).

George and Jane are there with a daughter Charlotte age 1. George 's age would have him B 1809 (not unusual given the 5 yr variation).
Jane is shown as not born in Oxfordshire, if she was from South Hinksey that would be right because it was in Berkshire then.
AND THEN LOOK - ANN CRIPPS age 6 also not born in Oxfordshire so I expect she was born in South Hinksey 1835 and it is this Ann who is listed in 1851 as Ann King so George may have been her dad. BUT more importantly it looks like the marriage in Oxford I found 1839 was most likley your George King to Jane Cripps which fits.
To be certain you HAVE to buy the certificates.

Phew - I hope this all helps you get to the next generation?

By the way you may know but Jane was living with her sons George and Joseph in Hempton Lane, Hempton and Patchway in Gloucestershire in 1871 (RG10/ 2584/32 p 24).
So it looks like you have a decade in which George may have died to find his death cert which can offer valuable clues.
The other thing is to look at each of the children where grand parents , nephews, nieces may have been living and offer you more info about the families origins

Hi,

   From OFHS South Hinksey PRs

Baptism... This looks like Jane's child

Jan 18 1835 Ann Cripps, baseborn dau of Jane

And

Feb 3 1811 Jane Cripps dau of Thomas and Mary

On the lines that this is correct here is Jane's parents marriage

Oct 13 1806 Thomas Cripps (x) to Mary Simes (x)
Wits... Thomas Cripps (x) Mary Simes (x)

Sorry there is no marriage here for Jane.....
If i can help anymore let me know  :)
