Upper and Lower Prospect Place in Southampton
« on: Thursday 31 December 09 00:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

The 1891 census shows my great-great-grandfather, Alfred Robert Harris, as living and working at 3&4 Upper Propsect Place.  He was co-owner of "Axtell & Harris, grocers and tea dealers".  The census indicates it is in the All Saints parish and I've found reference to it in the 1887 Kelly's directory however this street seems to have disappeared.  I know there is a Prospect Place in Hythe but I don't believe this is the one I'm looking for.  Judging from aerial maps I'm guessing this area was heavily damaged during the war and possibly redeveloped, at which points the old roads disappeared?  Can anyone confirm whether this is the case?

I'll be visiting Southampton (albeit very briefly) next year and am trying to determine whether there is anything to see at 3&4 Upper Prospect Place.

Thanks very much,
Steve

There are, Photograph. Prospect Place (now demolished) was situated on the on the east side of Above Bar Street, set back from the road, see here

There are Street Directory from 1811 - 1970 here that may help,

Hi Ann,

Thanks very much for the clarification and the links.  I found several photos which date from around the time when the grocers would have existed.  I'll be sure to include Above Bar Road in my walk, despite the fact that the buildings are long gone.

I've subsequently found that by 1907 Alfred had a grocers at 7 Lower Canal Walk.  There are some excellent photos of this area as well, but unfortunately these buildings were demolished in the 1930's.

Thanks again for your help!

Steve
