Patish records, Inverness, James Hamilton
« on: Wednesday 30 December 09 06:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello, does anyone have access to baptism/burial records for Inverness, Inverness, Scotland?  Looking for information re baptisms/deaths/burial of James Hamilton b/about 1785-90 and his wife, Margaret Hamilton [nee McLeod]

Think Margaret Hamilton [nee McLeod] born about 1791 in Inverness.

Believe James Hamilton and Margaret McLeod married October 1811, Inverness - not sure.

Appreciate any information.
Thanks

Hi  :)

The IGI on www.familysearch.org shows their marriage on 24 October 1811, Inverness. This is from the extracted records series and so it should be accurate.  To view the parish records, you could go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which is pay to view but very reasonable.  Alternatively, the parish record films can be ordered via Family History Centres.

Neither the IGI nor the Scotlands People site have a baptism showing for James in  Invernessshire 1770-1790. Margaret McLeod is a failry common name in the Highlands.

Do you have their children's names in birth order? This might give some clues of their parentage.

Hello Gadget
Thanks for your prompt reply.  Will check out the site.  Yes, it seems McLeod is the equivalent of our Smith.

I think - but am not sure - James and Margaret's children were:
Margaret Hamilton b/about 1812
Jean Hamilton b/about 1816
Rachel Hamilton bap 12 June 1820, Inverness.
James Hamilton b/about 1823
Donald Hamilton v/about 1826

The only definite clue I have is through Rachel whose son stated on her death certificate that Rachel was born Inverness and her parents were James Hamilton and Margaret McLeod.  Prior to this I had been looking in Ireland as Rachel came to Australia from Tyrone.  Don't know what she was doing in Tyrone or whether the whole family were working there - problem is I don't know her parents' occupation.

Appreciate any help.

Hi Maddison  :)

A thought as it's just turned New Year  so don't want to do too much checking until later :)

Could James have been in the Army - Inverness had a large garrison at Fort George and there were regiments in Ireland.

Maybe worth checking the National Archives for any records.

Happy New Year

Hi

Just checked out Rachel's baptism record.

James is down as a seaman. One of the witnesses was a Donald McLeod. This may be a relative of Margaret's or one of the kirk elders, for example.

Hi Gadget - Sorry to tear you away from your New Year celebrations.

But that's fantastic knowing James Hamtilon's occupation - seaman.  Perhaps the family moved to Ireland as James was a seaman.  I think, as you say, the Donald mentioned may be a relative Rachel's uncle - possibly   Margaret's brother.  Have found a bap 16 May 1791 for Margaret McLeod dau of Donald McLeod and Janet McKinzi [exact spelling but suppose it's McKenzie] but nothing for a Donald McLeod with those parents.

Thanks again for your help - and if you have any further suggestions would appreciate them.

All the best for the New Year.

Hi I'm looking for info on James Hamilton living in Stewartstown county Tyrone in 1911 census.  He is a house (horse?) dealer aged 40 and his wife Mary (no children) is living with him, she is 30.  In the same house is James Cummins/ Cummings, my great grandfather, aged 40 and a general labourer.  James C gives his relationship to the Head of family James H as cousin.  Has anybody else come across this James Hamilton?  Any help much appreciated!
