Hi Pizel

As Carole has asked, have you actually looked at the 1896 marriage entry for John, in particular to check how the details on his parents were written down? It may be that his parents were not married which is why you are not finding his birth entry under Shields and spelling variants for this name.

Not sure how accurate some of the submitted info on IGI for John is, which is often the problem with submitted entries on IGI. There is for example a submitted entry for John on 17 NOV 1862 in Balmerino, Fife, with parents Francis and Mary. However, whilst there is an actual extract entry on IGI (and therefore SP) for a birth of a John Shields then, the mother shows as Margaret Shields.

This is why the information on his marriage and death certs could help you in establishing names and relationship between parents (ie. whether they were actually married).

Also a possibility that he wasn't actually born in Scotland but Ireland? With mother Mary having two surnames (what is the source for these names?), Carole has found as actual extract a marriage between a Francis Shields and a Mary McCann in Glasgow in 1864. There are these IGI birth entries showing with parents Francis Shields and Mary Lappin:

1. FRANCES SHIELDS Birth: 19 MAY 1866, Ireland
2. MARY JANE SHIELS  Birth: 22 DEC 1871, Tyrone
3. ANNIE SHEALS Birth: 24 FEB 1877, Tyrone

With John showing as a coal miner hewer in 1901, there is this possible entry that might fit with an Irish birth place in 1891:

John Shields, 18, boarder, coal miner, b. Co Tyrone living with the Hart family in Bothwell Lanarkshire.

However, given that you only have John in the 1901 census at present where he shows a Glasgow birth, there will always be doubt until you are able to verify through a birth entry, in either Scotland or Ireland.

If you have got John's marriage cert, what was his father Frances' occupation? There is this entry for example in 1891:

Francis Shields 45, shoemaker b. Ireland
Mary Shields 44, b. Glasgow
Annie Shields 14 b. Ireland....could match that IGI entry in Co Tyrone?
Lizzie Shields 11 b. Ireland
Maggie Shields 7 b. Ireland

Address: 7 Albert St, Govan Lanarkshire

Hello Monica,
Thank you for taking the time to reply, On Johns marriage cert his father Francis is down as a shoemaker journeyman, and his mother is recorded as Mary MS Lapping, John is recorded as a coalminer, although he has had a few jobs, on his wife's death cert he is deceased and a marine engineer, John and Christina also had a son Francis in 1900 he died 7 mths then John was a stoker on a steam vessel, on my Grandads birth cert( also Francis born 1904)he is again a coal miner, I have seen the census return you've posted and this I believe is the same family, on Johns fathers death cert Francis is still recorded as a shoemaker journeyman and married to Mary Lappin, his death was recorded by daughter Mary Jane,
I have been in contact with the lady who posted the birth details on IGI, to let her know this is not the John I'm looking for.Francis & Mary were married in St Andrews Chapel G/gow on 8th Jan 1864.
