Where is Elizabeth Caroline Hazzard - help please!
« on: Tuesday 29 December 09 20:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to track down my great great grandmother in the 1881 census but after trying variants of spelling and random searches, Im getting frustrated! Elizabeth Caroline Hazzard was born in Southwark, Surrey in 1865, daughter of William Henry and Elizabeth (nee Cheatle).  I have found her in the 1871 census, and I have found her parents in the 1881 census but she is no longer with them.  I have a record for her marriage to my great great grandfather Joseph Garwood in Kensington in 1889, she is listed then as living at ?Sfield road, I am assuming in Kensington also, I have attached an extract from their marriage entry also if someone knows what road this is also! I have her in the 1891 and 1901 censuses but its the 1881 brick wall that is annoying me!

Is anyone researching this line or know what other variations of hazzard I could try? Ive tried hazard, haggard, hassard and variations with just one s or one g.   Also does anyone know what the address is that Elizabeth has listed? Her parents are listed as living here in the 1891 census but I still can't work out what the name of the road is  :-\ it was part of Brompton, Kensington.

Many thanks!

If you search for Ifield Road on streetmap.co.uk it comes up as being right next to Brompton Cemetery in West Brompton, London.   South Kensington is to the North.

In 1881 120 Ifield Road is at RG11/47 50/29:
several households, in case any of the surnames ring a bell:
Robert Pellat, and wife Charlotte
Elizabeth Askey, and sister Edith (born Belgium!) (navy connection)
Sophia Lynes, a widow, and her daughter Hannah
Lewis and Sarah Fines, and a visitor, Valentine Carnell.

None of the families have domestics with them but some of their neighbours have boarders (there are a couple at 124), so she could have been working in the area and renting a room at 120.

Did Elizabeth have:
elder sisters/brothers also unaccounted for in 1881?
aunts/uncles on either side currently unaccounted for in 1881?

Are there witnesses on the marriage certificate whose names you don't recognise? (perhaps a coworker or friend or someone else who also lived at 120 Ifield Road).  If she was working in 1881 as a live-in domestic then someone who wasn't very sure of her age or birthplace might have given the information to the census taker.

Thanks for identifying the road guys, its nice to see that it is still there in some form as well.  I have accounted for her siblings, only her brother is living with their parents: her sister is also a servant elsewhere.  Also have accounted for her uncles and aunts on the hazzard side, its more difficult on her mother's side (her maiden name was Cheatle).  But still no sign! Her witness was an Emily Leddy Burrell which is no help at the moment but I will keep looking.

Thanks for the advice :)
