William was variously a shop assistant, merchant's clerk & steward, but from the mid-1890's was a painter & decorator. Catherine's maiden name is sometimes given as O'Neill on the birth certs. I do have more on William & Catherine's grandchildren & beyond, but some, I know, are still alive & most I can't be sure about.
I am convinced that the John Savage mentioned by Samanthamsavage is a close relative of James; I don't have the relevant notes to hand, but I think he was also in the milling or shop keeping business, & Eva being b. in Fisher St is maybe more than a coincidence. I think they may have been originally from Co Fermanagh, which may strengthen their link to the Neil family.
Charlie & Maggie's 2nd son was b. Mar qtr 1923 in Halifax registration district, Yorks, but I'm fairly sure both appear on the 1924 Victoria Electoral Roll in Leongatha, Gippsland, hence my guess at their emigration date.
I am indebted to Ivan & Graeme for posting their pics on the Munster Fusiliers website. I recognised Fred immediately - my parents have the same portrait of him in 1917/18, as well as many others of the family.
I hope that's helpful & would welcome any additions/corrections.
Sorry about the glitch.
James
