1916 Census Alberta Calgary, Bird Francis J
« on: Monday 28 December 09 10:40 GMT (UK) »
Can somebody fill in the blanks for me please.

I have found

Bird, Francis J        1882
Bird, Maude           1891
Bird, Frances M      1912
Bird, Hilda B           1914
Bird, Albert Ernest 1915

on the 1916 Census of Alberta in Calgary East, and would like to know the details especially about Francis J, where was he born?  England, Staffordshire, a town would be nice!  To confirm I have the right Francis John Bird born March 1883 in Hammerwich.

Many thanks

Thank you so much Dollylee, pity it only mentions England!  I'll go with the best fit Francis John Bird until I get a copy of the marriage certificate.

Many thanks again
Mark

1911 Census has a Frank Bird listed in Calgary, age 28
He is listed as a boarder and is a new arrival, year 1911. He is listed as born in England but nationality Canadian. This could be info that was given by someone else as he is a boarder.
There is another Frank Bird, same age but born in the USA

You can view a split screen on the above site and see the original documents as well as the transcribed.

Under Soldiers of the First world War at collections canada, there is a Francis Bird that is a driver, which was his occupation in the 1916 census. It doesn't give his attestation papers so you would have to order the whole file. I would keep this in mind in case you run out of options.

He is listed as born in England but nationality Canadian. This could be info that was given by someone else as he is a boarder.

Here is an explanation from Library and Archives Canada as to why a recent arrival from England would have Canadian for nationality prior to 1947:

Quote
Citizenship
From 1763 until the Canadian Citizenship Act came into force on January 1, 1947, people born in Canada were all British subjects. Since immigrants born in Great Britain and the Commonwealth were already British subjects, they had no need to become naturalized or to obtain British citizenship in Canada.

The Frank Bird in Calgary who arrived in 1911 on the 1911 census does have a birth date listed as March 1883 on the census. Here's a link to the transcription and image (he's third on the page):
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=8977

The head of the household that Frank was boarding with was named Samuel North and he had a daughter named Maud who was born Aug 1891 (she's the first one listed on the page of the census that Frank is on). It may be a coincidence that Francis' wife was named Maud as the birth place on the 1911 census for Maud is Indiana, USA and not Ontario.
