Lewis / Fawcett, Sicklinghall, W. Riding YKS
« on: Sunday 27 December 09 23:16 GMT (UK) »
Greetings, and Happy New Year...

I am hoping to find an image or a transcription of a parish registry for the following 4 children, or any one or more of them.  Their father was Jonathan Lewis, and their mother was Elizabeth Fawcett.  It appears that they were all born out of wedlock.  Their father was recorded as being a "Farmer" in the 1841 census, and their mother, Elizabeth Fawcett, a servant at the same address, i.e., a farm servant or more correctly, a Servant in Husbandry, Sicklinghall, YKS.

Per GRO (FreeBMD), it appears that the children were given their mother's surname at birth (Fawcett), with two of them also being returned with "Lewis" inserted secondarily along with "Fawcett":

Aaron - b. 4th qtr 1838
Moses - b. 2nd qtr 1841
Miriam - b. 1st qtr 1844
Robert - b. 3rd qtr 1846

Per GRO (FreeBMD), all births were registered at Knaresborough, YKS.

Thanks for any and all help and advice...

On ancestry under the West Yorkshire baptism (images are on the site) for Kirkby Overblow & Sickling Hall there's an entry on 15/12/1838 for Aaron Lewis son of Elizabeth Fawcett, abode Sickling Hall.

Haven't been able to locate the others on your list (yet).

Interestingly (or is it?) whilst browsing the records noticed there are entries for baptisms with parents George & Sarah Lewis abode Sickling Hall, Farmer - could he be related to Jonathan?

Thanks Kiestone and Ibbo,

Yes, Jonathan Lewis and George Lewis are brothers.  Both Jonathan Lewis and Elizabeth Fawcett were born in Yorkshire and both were in the US (northern Pennsylvania) prior to 1838.  Upon the death of Jonathan's father, Robert Lewis, at Sicklinghall in 1836, Jonathan returned to the UK (Sicklinghall), the purpose of which was to claim his inheritance, and he brought Elizabeth with him.  They stayed there on the farm at Sicklinghall for a few years before returning to the US (northern Pennsylvania) in 1844 with, by then, 3 children (Aaron, Moses and Miriam).  All three UK births were registered, but with mixed surnames (Fawcett / Lewis).  Jonathan bought-up a ton of land in northern Pennsylvania with the heritated money and he and Elizabeth remaind there for the rest of their lives.
