Drover licences - do they still exist?

Hello all.  One of my Northamptonshire ancestors was a drover in (at least) the 1830s and 1840s.  I have just read that drovers had to be licenced - although I do not know up until what period. 

Are there any extant records of drover licences for Northamptonshire/Peterborough?  If so, where would I find them?

Hi Mark.

It could be possible to ask for someone to look through the
Quarter Sessions books for the period, and find if his name is noted.

This are held at the Northants Record Office.

Hello Sandy - and happy Christmas!

Ah, so is that where the records would exist?  As I am living in Ireland, it would be wonderful if anyone who was looking up the Quarter session books was able to scan for any reference to the man for me.

His name was John Serjeant (a surname that officialdom spelt lots of different ways, as you can imagine) and he was born in 1801 in Peterborough.  His children's birth/baptismal records have his occupation noted as drover from 1831 through to 1843.  The 1851 census records him as a salesman, although I guess it is possible that this is one way of describing the same occupation.  He had died by the 1861 census, although I cannot find a certain death record for him.

Any record of when he started and ended this work, who he worked for, where he lived, or anything else the records say about him, would be very exciting to learn.
