Hi

When you receive her marriage cert - please use this same thread to post the full details from the certificate and we will (hopefully) be able to find her for you

There is also this 1861 entry to bear in mind

Little End Marshfield Gloucestershire - all b Marshfield

John Jefferies 47 agricultural labourer
Caroline   45
John   16
Caroline  7
Hester 5
RG9 Piece 1744 Folio 111 Page 25

Hi Nigel

This was the posting that I was referring to - here we have a Hester Jefferies of roughly the correct age living in Marshfield. It may be sheer co-incidence but I don't think so. Well done Carole  :)

Hi Gadget,

Yes, I had seen Carole's post and the GRO reference probably does correspond to the Census entry. However, based on the information posted by Kiwiham (the initiator of this thread) we don't know at present whether Marshfield in Gloucestershire (rather than somewhere else) is relevant to the person concerned. Hence, the reason for asking for details from the marriage certificate before coming to any conclusions.

More checking of course - but it's the only Esther/Hester Jefferies (alts) who has been found born and living Marshfield in the 1861 census so it has to be seen as the best find so far.

It might be worth checking whether this Hester/Esther disappears  :)

Interesting ~

On the 1871 the John Jefferies that Carole found is still in Marshfield, Gloucester -  John Jefferis, snr, farmer of 6 acres - RG10.2579/45/14

Hester is down as Esther Jeffrey, b. Marshfield,  Gloucester,  a servant, aged 15, living in Batheaston - RG10/2498/42/5

Added - So far I don't see an Esther or a Hester b. Marshfield circa 1855 on the 1881 but John Jefferies is still in Marshfield - now a General Labourer!

Hi Gadget,

That would fit with Esther Jeffries marrying a William Baker in New Zealand in 1877 (Reg. No. 1877/1646).

Well, I received the marriage certificate copy. Unfortunately, although it helped with my research (I found out William had been previously married) it didn't help much with this inquiry. I also took the opportunity to look at the "Intention to marry" notice.

What I had been hoping for was that Esther would have been under the age of 21 which would have required the consent of her father. She was 22 which meant the name of the father was not recorded. She had been resident in the district for 16 months prior to Sep. 1877.

So I take it the consensus is that she was born in Marshfield, Gloucester. Is that right?

It all seems to fit given that the one we found was b. 1855 (Reg Chipping Sodbury, Sept q 1855)

Well, many thanks everyone. That will help.

I will now look for the family using the usual methods.

Again, thanks.

Have a HESTER Jefferies baptised at Marshfield Gloucestershire on 29/07/1855 to parents John & Caroline.

Could this be yours?

Have transcribed much of Marshfield, and so if you need any other names from the area, just contact me.
