Josiah Bentley - help please - completed
« on: Saturday 26 December 09 16:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi Merry Christmas!

I have trouble finding Josiah Bentley b. 1891, son of Abraham Bentley, no occupation. He married in 1915 ot Alice Knell. He died in 1932 age 41. Josiah's address on marriage cert says Fleeming Road, Walthamstow, Essex. Abrarham was deceased at Josiah's marriage.

It look like Josiah was alone on 1911 and 1901 censuses. I don't think he was born before 1891 census.

There are too many Abraham Bentley on BMD records - how do I know which is him?

Can you help me please?

Hi Grub,

Is he the pauper age 10 in 1901, born Royston Cambridgeshire?

If so, this looks like his birth registration

Josiah Bentley
Sep 1890 Royston 3a 485

This christening could be a match - Barkway comes under Royston district:

Josiah Bentley
10 Aug 1890
Barkway, Hertfordshire
Parents Abraham Pegram Bentley and Martha Ann
(a brother William James is christened on the same day)

This Josiah is at RG12/1101 50 4 in 1891 - shout if you want the details

There's a birth registration in Croydon 1864 for Abraham Pegrum Bentley.

Abraham Pegram Bentley marries Martha Ann Hunt in 1889, Royston district and remarries (a 46 year old widowed platelayer, no father shown) an Adelaide Corp on 4th July 1910 in Islington.

Not sure yet where he's hiding on the censuses apart from 1911  :P

Added:

Just searched for a death and the most likely death I see for Abraham is Islington 1920 = after Josiah's marriage  :-\

In 1891, he's at Barkway Hertfordshire (possibly mistranscribed as Josie)

I don't know anything about English geography myself but this is what Genuki says about Barkway
http://www.joinermarriageindex.com/pjoiner/genuki/HRT/Barkway/index.html

and Royston Registration district:

I don't know which sites you have access to. Ancestry have a database of christening transcriptions.

Abraham's birth is on the IGI:
Abraham Pegrum Bentley
4 Sep 1864 Mitcham, Surrey
mother Charlotte Bentley
