Looking for an Irene Hillman
« on: Thursday 24 December 09 19:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find details on an Irene Hillman .b.1902 in Stafford England .
I believe she arrived in St .John.. New Brunswick on 19 April 1926, onboard a Canadian Pacific ship named 'Metagama'.
As far as I know she had no other family members with her .
Any help and advice on tracing her would be appreciated .

Regards

George

Hello George

Irene actually gives her age as 19 on the Metagama passenger list, giving a likely birthdate closer to 1907 than 1902.  As you say, she was from Stafford and gave details of her nearest relative at home as being Mr J Hillman, brother, of 86 North St, Stafford.

You should be able to find Irene with her family in the 1911 census, available on a pay basis only from www.findmypast.co.uk.

NB I am assuming that what you are wanting to do is trace Irene before she went to Canada, rather than her life after she got there - is that correct?

Hi Anna
Thankyou for your swift reply

My mistake,
Irene was Baptised 16 Aug 1906 (parish records) J. Hillman would have been her brother John,  her father was Joseph but had died by that date .
I am trying to find about her life in Canada  (is that possible?)

Looking promising indeed

However Joseph was married twice, fist wife Anne then Irene's mother Dorothy not sure where Lillan comes from .She did have a sister Lillian who I believe brought the younger children up as Dorothy and Joseph died while Irene was young ,maybe this is where this came about ?

Quite possibly - perhaps because "Mother" had died when she was very young she never knew what her given name had been.

I should, however, say that the record is very faint in parts and it's actually more like "...daughter of Joseph Hillman and...[illegible words] Lillian."
