Hi Jan...could you give a very hi-resolution (say 1200dpi) scan of just the thing on the hat, maybe someone can make it out.

Hi

I think the 'thing' on the hat might be an animal/bird foot brooch. I had an aunty who had one in her hat in the late 1940s-early 1950s and I was fascinated by it  :)

I just found the 'thing' I thought was on her hat ... its feathers mounted on a clip with a jewel ... my grandmother used to wear it (just like the one on your photo), on her hats !
