Deportation of Thomas EMERY in 1844

I am the great granddaughter of Susan Emery, Thomas's and Johanna Gorman's daughter. I would like to hear more about the Emery clan in the UK.

It appears the Emery's were farm labourers and Thomas was trying to help his large family as the eldest, by stealing some poultry and potatoes. He paid dearly for that by transportation. However it appears that he owned a property at his death, on good farmland in Victoria Australia, something he would never have had in the UK. Another relative did some research that showed that all of his children were Catholics because Johanna was a Catholic and this was her stipulation upon marriage. A few of the siblings left Clarendon and went out to Gippsland, the other side of Victoria, where they also farmed.

Thomas's parents were my 2x maternal great grandparents Isaac was born in abt.1798 in Potton Bedfordshire UK,he was an Agricultural Labourer as were most of the family, and Elizabeth b.abt.1800 inGamblingay Cambridgeshire,they had 10 children of which Thomas b.1822/27 was the eldest,he wa transported to Australiafor 10 years  in 1844 aged17 for stealing fowls and potatoes.hisyounger brother James was also at regular intervals a guest of the realm ranging from stealing to assault,he was sentenced on one to 5yrs.imprisonment for what was a particularly nasty attack on his third wife,lucky not to have been transported dont you think,the next brother William b.abt.1827 can also be found to be in Australia but as yet haven't managed to find out much about him the state of Victoria are a bit mean with the sccess to their files,the interesting fact about these two brothers is that they both died in Ballarat NSW in 1878,possibly some sort of accident,as for the rest of the children I am slowly working my way through them with not a lot of joy as yet.

PROV has a digitised Will for Thomas EMERY, died 13 August 1878, farmer, of Clarendon, Victoria

He leaves all to his wife, Johanna, for her lifetime, while she remains single and until the youngest child comes of age. Then his estate is to be divided among his youngest six children.  He specifically states that his oldest child, Mary, is to be left out of the division of the estate but that 25pounds is in a bank for her. Eldest son John is to be manager for his mother - "so long as he conducts himself in a proper way to the satisfaction of his mother".  The will is dated

There is an inventory also.

PROV wills sometimes take a while to download - patience is needed!

Hi I'm so sorry to just interrupt
My partner is an emery he has relatives in hi family tree Florence maud huckle she married 1910 Frederick emery.  Is there any information you can tell us on the family as really struggling and I'm trying to surprise my partner with new information.  Please help many thanks

Welcome to Rootschat

From what I can see Florence Maud HUCKLE and Frederick EMERY lived all their lives in Bedfordshire, England.  I think Frederick was a nephew of the Thomas EMERY who is the subject of this thread. Frederick's father Isaac is a brother of this Thomas.

Are you in UK?

There are some family trees which have lots of information about Florence Maud and Frederick on Ancestry - one even has a pic of Florence Maud.  You can probably access Ancestry on a free trial or perhaps your local library has it for free.
