Anyone know Generals Row Coathill?
« on: Tuesday 22 December 09 09:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi
In the 1851 census my ancestors lived at General's Row, Coathill, Old Monkland.
The males were all coal miners.
Is Coathill the old name for Coatbridge and can anyone tell me where this Row was?
The family lived at Rosehill Colliery four years later, so I am wondering if General's Row is part of that area but am coming up blank when I google it.
Thanks
Paula

That part of Coatbridge has been largely re-developed. Rosehall is between Whifflet and Shawhead heading for Bellshill.

Hi Sancti
Thanks for placing Rosehall. I do have some old photos of the houses at Rosehall and a description of it - pretty grim by the sounds of it. It's General's Row though that I can't find any references to. Do you think it was part of the colliery housing?

I'm pretty sure they would have been part of the pits in that area. I'll have a look at some of my old maps to see if it shows up although 1851 may not be available

I'm told that a photo of General's Row was used for Orwell's "Road to Wigan Pier"

Presumably named for the laird, Brig' General Sir Thomas Monteith Douglas?

Hi Mark - I've googled illustrations from the book and the Generals Row photo was used in the original book. He didn't select the pictures but he did approve them before publication. Facinating stuff, thank you.

This map shows Back Row, Middle Row, and Front Row. Perhaps Generals Row was the houses to the east of Front Row https://maps.nls.uk/view/74955781#zoom=4&lat=9218&lon=1895&layers=BT

Fascinating map - think you're right about those houses to the east.
