Port of departure for emigrants from Roscrea?
« on: Monday 21 December 09 19:04 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Can anyone tell me of the most likely port of departure for emigrants from Roscrea to the US in the early 1800's?  I have some information for some Roscrea ancestors that suggests Newry, but that did not seem likely to me when Dublin was much closer.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say Limerick and Cobh are also possibilities

Limerick would be the nearest major post at just over 70km away from Roscrea, Dublin is over 120km, Newry is even further...

Shane,

Thanks for that information, too!  It didn't make much sense to me that the emigrants from Roscrea would go to Newry!
