1901 Census lookups Please! Sheppard
« on: Monday 10 May 04 12:44 BST (UK) »
Hiya

I would be gratefule if anyone could tell me anything at all about my grandfather.  His name was Joseph Walter Samuel Sheppard and he was born in Lambeth on 4th August 1891.  I have conquered most of the other legs of my tree but Granddad Jack is a mystery!  Help!

Hi David

Have you been to the 1901 cesus web site ?

The web address is :-

www.census.pro.gov.uk

You can do a person search for free, but have to pay for more info.
I have found it very useful.  :)

Good luck

hi david,
seems Joseph MAY have been registered as Walter...
Sheppard  Walter   8   Lambeth London   London   Scholar

since the 1901 online scrambled their results, its difficult to tell if this is him or not.
do you have his parents or siblings? or an adress which we could double check?

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I really appreciate that.  I hve sent email to rellies in England requesting a bit more information about siblings and parents etc.  I will let you know but they are usually a bit tardy.

Hi jaq
Thank you for taking time to look up my gradfather, I really appreciate that.   I have been looking for 3 months and you have found him!
I have a few of questions for you that will probably confirm to you that I am new to this.
1)  I can't find 1871online.com - what am I doing wrong?
2) How come he is in 1871online.com when he was born 20 years later?
3) How come there is no reference to any Joseph Sheppard in teh 1901 census.
4) Finally "joseph walter  sheppard born lambeth 1d 361 august  1891" does not mean a lot to me - how do I apply for his birth certificate?

If these are silly questions I apologise in advance.
Thanks
David Sheppard

Hi there

(1)  Try 1837online.com.
(2)  1837online.com covers Civil Registration Records from 1837 onwards, not just for 1837.
(3)  Loads of reasons why he might not have been on the census in 1901 (he avoided it, was living under an assumed name, had gone abroad, etc, etc)
(4)  "joseph walter  sheppard born lambeth 1d 361 august  1891" - you can apply to the Public Record Officer for a copy birth certificate.  Log on to www.col.statistics.gov.uk to order online.  When asked if you have the GRO reference, choose Yes and enter Volume 1d, page 361, 3rd quarter 1891 - the certificate will cost £7.00, and you will be given an estimated despatch date.  I've found that if you know the GRO ref, your certificate arrives sooner than the despatch date.

Good luck!
Researching
ARTHUR, ROBERTS, LEWIS and WILLIAMS in Denbighshire/Merionethshire/Glamorgan
EVANS and JONES in Montgomeryshire
FALLOW(E)S, JONES, PREECE and GITTON in Shropshire
and the list keeps growing...
(March 2006) Now looking for HINKS, SPARKES, INGRAM from West Midlands area

Hi david,
there are references to 34 Sheppard's born in lambeth on 1901.
including one joseph who is wrong age [17] and a Walter age 8..knowing that 1901 isnt 100% accurate, all you can do is apply for his birth certificate using the reference i gave you from 1837 site as bel_jon has explained. [i hope its the correct one]
i have entered the other results onto an excel sheet, which i can post here if you wish.
dont stop asking questions   ;)  and let us know how you get on :)

Many thanks for the time and information made available to me in this thread.   It definitely sounds like the man I have been looking for all this time - thanks. ;D

I am in the process of ordering from  www.col.statistics.gov.uk as suggested and they do not make it easier for us 'foreigners"!  They only allow on-line ordering from within the UK.

Apparently I have to: "Payments from abroad should be by an international money order, cheque or draft (payable in London ) made out to ONS and expressed in pounds sterling, quoting a UK clearing bank." Whatever that all means!  Grrrr! >:(  Thanks for listening!
