Hodgson
« on: Monday 21 December 09 10:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello Listers,

I hope you can help me. My GG Grandfather, George Hodgson was born in Skelwith, near Langdale in 1836, and christened at Langdale chapel on 16th October 1836. His mother being Margaret Hodgson (1820 to 1877).

Unfortunately George was illegitimate, and I have no idea who the father was. I have tried to see via the internet whether there was a bastardy bond, without success.

Any help with trying to obtain the name of the father, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Peter

Have you got his marriage certificate or parish register of the marriage? Illegitimate children sometimes named their father on that, but I don't think there's a 100% guarantee that they're correct as they also sometimes used the grandfather's name.

I'm no expert, so please treat my suggestion with caution.

Tecwyn. :)

As this is after 1834 I suggest that you need to look at the records of the local poor law union.  I must admit that I am not sure which union this would be.

The second place to look is at the records of the local parish.  That is the other records in the parish chest other than the registers.  These should be in the county record office.

The third place to look is at the records of the local courts.

Most of these are unlikely to be on-line and involve research of original records.

Many thanks for your comments.

George's marriage certificate states his father was John Hodgson, but I think that this is not true. His mother eventually married a John Airey from Troutbeck in 1849, so I guess this is where the John comes from.

I will have to pay a visit to Kendal records office, the next time I am in the north west of England.

Best wishes,
Peter
