Autuoun Surname
« on: Sunday 20 December 09 10:38 GMT (UK) »
My GGGG grandmother was Ann Autuoun, she married John Channon, and they had a son James Channon. I am finding the name Autuoun difficult to trace. When you google is there is no results. I have a copy of the original death certificate of James Channon which states his mother as Ann Autuoun. Does anyone have any ideas of any different spellings, or even the pronounciation? I'm not even sure about how this surname would be pronounced so I don't even know what alternative names to search.

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Krista.

Welcome to rootschat Krista.

A few questions to get the ball rolling:
Do you have any dates of birth/ marriage/ death for any of these people?
Also places of birth/ marriage/ death?

Sounds like a misspelling or misinterpretation of that surname. Are you able to post a section of the certificate for us to see how this surname appeared?

There are some hits with the spelling  as "Autoun"

3 hits on 1920 US census
1 Quebec Vital and Church records (part of Drouin Collection)

1 Ny Passenger list
4 US Public records

The name seems to be associated with the Surname Adams.

A number of people with Adams trees mention Autoun.also  search for Autoun also list many pages of Adams.

Thank you both for your replies.

Unfortunately I have limited information on this line. I have the death certificate for James Channon (John Channon and Ann Autuoun's son). He died in 1904 in Waterloo, New South Wales, Australia. As I have had difficulty with the name I have been unable to locate a marriage certificate for John and Ann. I cannot find any records for James Channon (their son) being born in Australia so I believe he would have been born in the UK. I unfortunately currently don't have access to a scanner, but the surname is clearly written on James death certificate autuoun (all lowercase).

I will have a look into Autoun as well right now...
Thanks again,
Krista

Hi there, thanks for your messages... James was 70 when he died in 1904. And I have just noticed the death certificate says he was born in Devonshire, England and had been in New South Wales for 55 years... (it isn't clear but on closer look I'm sure that's what it says). Autuoun is written very clearly though, but the informant was his son in law which could definitely leave it open to mistakes... I am going to do a bit of a search now.

Thanks

The IGI coverage of Devonshire is not that great, just to warn you.

Do you know when/where he married? (Presumably somewhere in NSW?)  That might give you better details than the death certificate.

For Ann's surname, I'll throw in a suggestion for "Autton"/"Autten" or similar.

Is there an Armenian connection?  The suname Altounyan comes to mind.
