?? a Royal Artillery uniform?
« on: Sunday 20 December 09 00:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I would appreciate assistance in identifying the uniform that this bloke is wearing.  We think that this is Charles Hewson and we think that he served some time in the armed forces in India pre 1900.  We have a reference indicating that he was on a pension on his return.

I would be keen to know if there is a way of confirming 1) that he was in india and 2) that he was injured and hence in receipt of a pension?

Thanks

Mike

Hi

Struggling to find a uniform like this one but the hat suggests the type worn by someone in a military band.  The stripes on the arm would suggest he was fairly high up in Rank but I will keep looking
Middlesex   Burnett  Clark   Potter    Cleary    Avery    Moore Howard Jode Keating
Norfolk    Rudd    Twite    Hudson    Chapman Moore Spink Adams
Suffolk    Horne    Cadge    Sutton    King    Adams
Essex    Cable    Wright                         Cumberland  Forbes
Somerset Clarke (pre 1800)                  Cambridgeshire Muncey Parcell
Devon  Flashman                                   Limerick    Hannigan

Ok the stripes on the arms could be sergeant chevrons but the cap has still got me confused because all the military uniforms I have known always have some form of insignia on the them to classify which unit or branch.

I'll keep looking

Royal Artillery other-rank, post-1881.

The five-button 'frock' was the trefoil cuff embellishment was introduced in 1881.

The inverted chervons are Long Service & Good Conduct stripes, prior to 1881 they were worn on the opposite sleeve.

The forage cap he is wearing is referred to as a 'kilmarnock', but more commonly known as a "pillbox hat".
