Sangal

Herewith the entries from Shaw's Directory 1850
Thomas Monks    2 Meredyth Place
Thomas Monks    42 Summerhill
Thomas Monks  148 Old Church Street  (dairy in street listing)
Thomas Monks   79 Upper Dorset Street  (No.71  a vintner in street listing)
There are no Index entries for Patrick or Richard but note that I have not found the Index to be completely accurate.

....I also have Monks in my Family tree and I am wondering if any of the Monks you have listed are my ancestors.I have a Thomas Monks b1876(Son of Patrick  and Mary Monks )married to Margaret Forde in Clondalkin in 1899.

sangal - except for a few people with dual addresses (e.g. separate home and business) I dont believe that Shaw's directory covers areas outside Dublin city like Clondalkin.

Do you know occupation/trade/business for any of your Monks ancestors ? If so it may be possible to locate them in a Thom's directory.

The Dublin 1851 census mentioned earlier also only covers the city area (roughly the area between the two Canals) and this is available (for a fee) on OriginsNetwork

Is this the Monks family you are researching :  Hamilton / Monks household  - Bushelloaf, Clondalkin   ?

My g/grandmother was Catherine(Kate) Monks. She married Joseph Mullen on 9 Aug 1875. Her address was 19 High St., Dublin. Her parents were Richard Monks and Anne ? He was born Sep 1834 - baptised 16 Sep in St. Andrews Ch. Dublin.
Siblings - Catherine, Rosanna, Joseph and Mary Jane.

His father was also Richard Monks, and he married Ellen Keogh on 14 Feb 1831 in St. Andrews Ch. Dublin.
I have checked al Monks on 1851 Dublin Census and Griffiths Val. but cant be sure of any being related.

I located the following cert.s but cant be sure of these either
Richard Monk -Death -20 Jul 1904 -age 91 -Dublin (This must be the one on 1830 Voting Reg. Farmer, Kilmainham, although on Death Cert. he is listed as Printer.)
Mary Anne Monks -Death -19 Mar 1865 -age 85 or 35 -Dublin
Ellen Monks -Death -5 Jul 1869 -age 70 -Dublin
Jane Monaghan or Monks (it is written like this) -Birth -15 Dec 1864 -17 Kilmainham -Father Thomas Monaghan or Monks -Mother Mary Daly. Informant is her mother, also Mary Daly.

Maybe one or some of you may recognise some of these and see a connection with there own ancestors.

I had a look at that census form and see that there is some additional birth location information listed for some of the children that might be useful in tracing where the family lived :

 Patrick Monks 11 - Fox & Geese
Jula Monks 5 - Blue bell
 Eileen 1 – Inchicore

One strange detail about the return is that Thomas relationship status is listed as 'Boarder Son in law' - which would suggest that Margaret's maiden name is Hamilton ?
