Church Street,Oldbury circa 1920
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 21:15 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a great aunt who was sent stay with a family unknown in Church Street Oldbury in about 1920. I have very little to go on except a mention in an old letter. "Standing with my back to the Westlayen Chapel, Tom Cooper's bicycle repair shop was opposite and my home was a large house slightly to the right. I spent my time with Toms daughter Eva. I lived in a large house to the right of Toms shop".

I am hoping that someone with a personal knowledge of old church st may have some idea of where this shop was. The only surviving 'old house' nearly opposite the Chapel is 'The Big House' but in the  1920's  there may have been more choices to speculate on.I have the previous owners listed for 'The Big House'

Hi Keith
I know you posted this forum quite some time ago, but I've just joined the site and found this message about Oldbury.
My mom was born in Oldbury in 1919 and lived literally in the street at the back of Church Street.  She's 92 tomorrow but she has a pretty good memory still.  She remembers Tom Coopers shop and has tried to recall what was around it.  Your Great aunt said there was a large house to the right of the shop, however mom said it was a line of terraced houses to the right, and on the left were other shops including a bakery.  She believes that the house next to the shop was a family called Moss.  For a child maybe it felt large!
Hope this may help in your search.

Regards
Carol

Thank you your message.Since posting I have made a few discoveries regarding my great aunt who was Gladys Lorna Perkins. She lived with her mothers sister Alice Wooldridge though which house in Church Street is unknown. There is still a period house opposite the Westlayen Chapel interestingly known as "The Big House",on the same side as the present day council offices.Apparently Tom Coopers shop was to the right of "The Big House", I wonder if your mum can remember if this is correct.

I spent a few hours at Sandwell Archives last year going through records but only property owners are recorded and not tenants. Gladys's uncle Richard Wooldridge worked at Danks the boiler factory but died in 1930.

Thank you for your interest. Your mums memories are very helpful and irreplaceable

Hi Keith
I have my mom here with me now and I'm getting her to walk down Church Street in her memory.  So here goes...  So entering Church Street, facing the direction of the Oldbury Cenataph and the Weselyn Chapel is on the left.  Left hand side corner was a building called The Noahs Ark, which used to a pub in previous years. Next door was Mr and Mrs Cox's sweet shop, who made his own toffee and sweets on the premises.  Photograph shop where they did framing.  A big house where the Territorials used to meet, which is still there.  Nash's Ironmonger shop. Then the chapel on the corner of Wesley Street and the school on the left behind the chapel.  There were houses on the opposite corner of Wesley Street.  The Oldbury Police station next, which in later years changed to a library.
Go back to beginning of Church street, on the right hand corner of Church Street and West Bromwich street was a gospel hall.  Next door was a row of terraced houses.  Fish and chip shop.  Walkers Newspaper shop.  Mrs Moss's terraced house.  And this is where she believes there was a big house.  Tom Coopers Cobbler shop just before Orchard Street.
Bless her she's really dug deep.  She does remember a butchers shop in Oldbury called Sam Wooldridge, which was in Birmingham Street, which is just around the corner from Church Street.  Any connection?
There is a local historian named Terry Daniels if you would like any more information.  He has hundreds of photo's too of the area.  If you google Oldbury History Society you can contact him there.  Hope we haven't confused!!

Regards
Carol

Hi Carol,
Please thank your mum for her quided tour of almost forgotten places. In a few weeks I hope to be visiting Gladys Lorna Perkins daughter who still lives in the midlands. She will be most interested in your memories.Lorna and her aunt and uncle originated in Devon and so it is still a mystery as to why they turned up in Oldbury in about 1920.I have noticed a small group of Wooldridge names around Oldbury but haven't been able to connect at the moment so I will have a closer look in this area. Terry Daniels has shared my interest in Church St with the Oldbury History Society and I have looked at a couple of beek on Oldbury in Old Photos.

Many thanks for your help.
