Kelly/Carney marriage
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 12:09 GMT (UK) »

   Hi

Can anyone help me find a marriage please, I have run out of ideas on where to look next.

   William Kelly B 1848 in Wolverstone,Durham
   married
Mary Ann Carney B 1851 in Newcastle Upon Tyne
Their first child James was born 1873 in Crook,Durham so am assuming that William and
   Mary Ann married 1872 - 1873.
The family appear on the 1881,1891 census of Durham and in 1901 appear without William.
Any help finding them would be much appreciated.

 Barbara,

This should be fairly easy, but as you already know, it isn't !  So....

From the start of civil registrations of BMDs in 1837, Wolviston (within the Parish of Wolviston) and Wynyard (within the Parish of Grindon) both lay within the Registration District of Stockton.

If William Kelly had been born in Wolviston (1891 info) or Wynyard (1881 info)
his birth would/should have been registered with Stockton ( in that era, Stockton's sub-districts were Stockton itself, Hartlepool, Sedgefield and Yarm)

I can see no sign of birth reg for a William Kelly ( even if his birth been c1838--- 1881 census has him aged 43 ! )

So was he born/registered elsewhere or in a name other than Kelly ?

Was Crook-born James there first child. It is possible they had an earlier child, born elsewhere ?

Have you spotted Mary Ann on a census before 1881 ?

 Michael

 Thank you for the reply.
Have had a hard time finding William Kelly, it hasn't helped with the mistakes in the census
and the 1881 census has his dob wrong.
So far have found the following.
1851 census - William Kelly b abt 1847 Wolsington Deerton, Ireland ?. parish of Washington
1861 census - Wilkinson Kelley b abt 1848 Wolverstone. parish of Haswell
1871 census - can't find him, probably at the pub or lodging somewhere
Child of Matthew and Catherine, both born in County Down,Ireland.

Cannot find Mary Ann Carney before the 1881 census and do not know who her parents were
or if there were any siblings - a blank.
As far as I know from senior family members her parents were also born in Ireland.
There may have been children before Crook- James Kelly but, do not know of any unless
 they died in infancy.

I have a map of Durham - Newcastle etc but, I am very confused with names, places etc.

 regards
 Barbara

Nearest I can see is a William Kelley marriage to Margaret Kearney in the Chester - le - Street registration district in 1868. I have found Margaret mistaken for Mary Ann in other documents in the passed.

As you may well know Kearney and Carney are pronounced the same and therefore were interchangeable at that time.

Good luck,
J.T.A.

Don't know if this will help but Durham Records Online has a 1889 baptism in Easington district for a George Kelly, parents William Kelly and Mary Kearney. I don't have any credits at the moment to look at the full entry, that's just what came up when I put the parents names in the search.

Thank you all very much for your help.
I am fairly confident that George Kelly b 1889 in Seaham is the son of my William & Mary Ann.
The marriage of "Margaret" Kearney to William Kelly is looking pretty good too, thanks for the
" Margaret" tip I hadn,t thought to look at that angle.
Will order the marriage cert and then hopefully be on my merry way again.

   Thanks again
