Marriage of a soldier stationed at Sarsfield Barracks about 1848
« on: Thursday 17 December 09 00:26 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if there was a garrison church at Sarsfield Barracks and if so whether marriages were performed there?  Are there records available?

I am looking for the marriage of a John O’Day (born 1818) stationed in Limerick (presumably Sarsfield Barracks) on and off throughout 1847-48 who married a Johanna Bulger (born about 1827) at some time during this period.

If soldiers from the Barracks did not get married in a garrison church, does anyone know where they might have got married in Limerick?  Is there a church nearby that was used?

Thanks for any help.

Hi

Sarsfield Bks was called New Barracks at the time, what religion were your ancestors.  The local catholic church was St Michaels, the protestant one was probably Trinity church.  Usually the marriage took place in the bride's parish church.  Non catholic civil marriage records exist since 1845, otherwise you will have to rely on church records.  Don't know the situation with the garrison church there is one currently and it existed in 1922 when the barracks passed to the Free state, don't know what denomination it was .  My great grandfather was stationed there in the 1880s anf got married in St Michaels RC church, his bride's parish.

Hope this is of help to you :) :) :) :) ;D

Thanks LimerickLad.

They were both RC as far as I know.  All their kids were baptised by RC chaplains in India.

Are any of the soldier records for Sarsfield / New Barracks online anywhere??

I am looking for a John Fitzgibbon (s) married to a Margaret Macguire/Mcguire for a friend. John was a soldier - son William Francis born about 1841. My friend is having trouble finding the marriage of John & Margaret?

I found a  baptism record in the Cloyne parish for a Mary Fitzgibbon - parents were John Fitzgibbon and Margaret Macguire but I am not sure that they are they same ones??

Mary's baptism record:

My relative was also a soldier in the New Barracks (1865) and I would be very interested to find out more.
I know he went to India with the 17th Reg from the birth records of his children on LDS, but I can't find any military records for him.

Thanks

Just noticed a Limerick Leader news article saying that a book about the Sarsfield Barracks was produced circa 2008.  One of the 4 authors, a Sgt Kelly, said, "We only recently found records, thanks to Noreen Ellerker in St Michael's Church, from the garrison church which go from 1856 to 1906 and have information on all the people who were buried and baptised in the church here."
