Real Long Shot on Unidentified Photos (Timaru)
« on: Monday 14 December 09 13:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've got past the clutching at straws stage: I have inherited two photos of a woman at Timaru and am at a loss. Any advice on how to proceed (such as getting the photographer's dates etc?) or if anyone (real long shot) recognises her!

I know this all sounds ridiculous, but you never know. Any advice really appreciated.

The woman could be a Jones, Davies, Allan or Anderson. Then again could be a friend, rather than relation.
First photo dated Nov. 18th 1922
written: "Barrosa", Mount Somers, Sth. Canterbury, New Zealand

Second: From Candid Camera Studies (Ham.) LTD, 136 Victoria St., Hamilton, N.Z.

Whoops  ... don't know if my eyes are deceiving me ... but before these images were cropped, I could have sworn they appeared in reverse order, to how they appear now ???

Can you just confirm please ... the image of the younger women, was the pic taken a Mt. Somers ?
Edit:   The word "Timaru" on  image # 2 of course suggests this is the photo taken at Mt. Somers ... which means the caption you provided initially, now applies to photo No. 2 :    :D

Incidentally, I think the spelling "Barrosa" may in fact be "Barossa", and it may well have a connection to the "Barossa Station" (land holding - farm) in the area near to Ashburton ?

Yes - sorry the attachments turned out the wrong way round - and sorry about them being too big!
Younger woman has Mt. Somers written on the back (it's a Christmas message in fairly impenetrable handwriting). I've worked on the assumption it's the same woman.

Thanks for the two sites - working my way through them now to see if I find anything

Hi again

Yes, the photographer relating to the Mt. Somers shot, appears to be a "John Roger STEWART".

Of the names you've mentioned (Jones, Davies, Allan, Anderson), do you have further information as to where these people lived in New Zealand ?
It may be possible to seek them out in electoral rolls (Mid-Canterbury area).    These rolls are not available for viewing online, but I'd be happy to do a look-up if you can provide some further info.    They're wonderful photos - it would be a shame not to at least try to identify the subject.   :)

Hi dfwdavies,

Here is another long shot in regard to the handwriting on the back, perhaps if you thought it might help you could pop it on the deciphering handwriting board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,425.0.html

maybe they could help with a name?

Good luck with your search

Hi there,

Perhaps the lady in the attached (circa 1950) photo was a descendant .... there's definite NZ connections for the lady in my photo...  sorry, my photo was scanned many years ago so perhaps not the "right" size...

If you think there's a likeness in their features, I may be able to help with family surname of the subject in those two photos from dewdavies...

Cheers,

JM

Hi dfwdavies  :)

I think the photo of the younger woman dates from just after WW1 and pre 1920...the older lady is probably 1940s or 50s.

Hope that helps - if you would like more opinions, just pop a message on the Photo Restoration and Dating board, asking the folks there to come and have a look at this thread  :D

Cheers
