Does anyone recognize Sydney Starling? d.1957
« on: Monday 14 December 09 02:00 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for anyone who may have known Sydney Starling.  He was born in Norwich in 1898 and lived at 121 Cragside Walk in Leeds at the time of his death in 1957.  He was a restaurant chef.    I don't know if he ever married or not or if he had any children (if anyone knows, please let me know!).  Sydney was my ggrandfather's brother.  Any info would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you
Elise

PS.  Sydney died February 21st, 1957.   If anyone could get me a copy of his obituary I would be eternally grateful!  :)

Have you got his death cert? If informant was his widow, or a son or daughter, then that would give a hint as to if he was married and/or had children!
Have you looked for a Will for him? Will possibly mention family members.

Yes, I do have the death certificate.  It says his sister was the informant.   I guess that doesn't mean he wasn't married as his wife could have predeceased him....but I guess it rules out any children unless they lived out of the area?!?!

Where do I look for a will?

OK, the death cert doesnt rule out a wife or children, they may have predeceased him, they may have not been local, or have been too upset, or 101 other reasons why they didnt register his death.

For a will, you can search the indexes free at the probate registry in Holborn London, (and also I believe at local Probate offices, so if you are nearer Leeds that might be worth pursuing).
If you find there is a Will or Letters of Administration then a copy can be sent for, at cost of £5, from the Probate place in York.
Alternatively you can just contact York and they will include a search for a year or so in the £5.
