Edward Lawton Murre(a)y
« on: Sunday 13 December 09 18:58 GMT (UK) »
In the 1891 census, my grandfather Edward Murrey, was possibly living with his Uncle and Aunt, John and Mary Lawton in Wolverhampton.  Edward was born in West Bromwich about 1881 although finding his birth has been difficult.  When he married in 1905 and moved to Wrexham, north Wales, he assumed the name of Edward Lawton Murray but dropped the Lawton after a year or so.  Anyone researching the name Lawton found any mention of Edward?
Many Thanks
Mike

Hiya Mike

On the 1901 is he a soldier at Whittington barracks?

If so it gives his place of birth as Livedale which I think is actually Tividale which is between Dudley and West Brom

The church there is St Michaels if you can find someone to look at the parish register

On FreeBMD there is a marriage Sept 1875 Walsall 6b 834

Francis Murray
Hannah Lawton
Margaret Rockneath
Richard Sweeney

I cant find Francis and Hannah or Margaret as a couple but I can find a Margaret and Richard Sweeney

I don't think thats him in Whittington  in 1901.  On Edward's marriage certificate he put his father's occupation as a fishmonger but I have searched for a Charles Murray who was a fishmonger and cannot find any record.  There is a record in 1901 of a Charles Murray with a son, Edward with the right age but Charles was an umbrella repairer so I cannot say for certain he was Edward's dad.  Edward and his wife  Phoebe Ella Bywater, tended to name their children after Phoebe's side of the family although there was a Francis among them.

Hi both  :)

I'm guessing that in 1901, your Edward is the one boarding in Wales at Brymbo RG13/5220 136 27.

Have you seen the 1881 census for John and Mary Lawton, Mike? They have a son Edmund (surname Lawton) age 3 months but there doesn't seem to birth registration on FreeBMD for Edmund Lawton. There is one however for Edmund Murray, Mar 1881 West Bromwich - coincidence?

Hi Tati.  No, my Edward did not come to Wales until about 1906, some say under a cloud which is maybe why he used the name Lawton Murray for a while.  His wife was heavily preganant when they married (nothing new in that I suppose) but they immediately went to live in the Wrexham area although their first child was born in Wolverhampton, John Alfred who survied until 1929.  Theie second son, Edward  was also born in Wolverhampton in 1908 even though their home was in Southsea in the Wrexham area.  He died  in 1909 in Wrexham.  Edward and phoebe lived at the same address until 1913.
I just looked back at my records and it maybe that he was called Lawton Edward Murray after his move.  I remember thinking at the time that the entry in the electoral rolls was not very clear.  In 1911 he was Edward Murray but his wife's name is down as Ellen, not Phoebe.  I know he called her Phoebe as I remember his recollections of her were fond   She died in 1933.   His son, William died 2 weeks later and it is said his hair went white overnight.

Does it rule the Wales 1901 census out, when it's a perfect match for the 1891 boy?  ???

Yes, it does rule out the 1901 Wales census.  I found the Edmund Murray in Free BMD in 1881 but I have been unable to find him in any census.
