West Indies: Roderick Fraser
« on: Sunday 13 December 09 09:11 GMT (UK) »
I have a Roderick Fraser Born about 1785 in the West Indies.
I have searched the West Indies entries on Ancestry without success.
Could anyone with more experience of researching this part of the world give me any advice as to where I may be able to find more information?
All I know is that he returned to England at some point.
Married Hannah Taylor in Alverstoke in 1806 and went on to have eleven children.
Any advice would be great!

Any clues as to possible sibling ? Any Frasers amongst the 1806 marriage witnesses perhaps?

What about the other Frasers in Portsea? There was a David Fraser born around 1785 who had a son Roderick. David Fraser was a shoemaker, and Roderick was a bootmaker in the 1841 census. Could he be a brother, or a cousin?

Roderick had a son David  born 1818.

Also there was a surgeon named William Fraser in Reading in 1851 who was born around 1795 in Nevis.

Hi Shaun
It's parents and siblings where I'm stuck. He had eleven children and I'm managing to trace most of them.
There were a lot of Davids and Rodericks in the family and there seem to be two main families of Frasers living in Portsea.  Both of which had Davids and Rodericks. Confusing!
One I can connect to mine. The other I suspect is related but I can't find the connection.
A lot of them worked as Military tailors mainly for the Royal Marines.
I didn't know about the William Fraser I've have a look at him. There are a lot of medics in the family so it could be possible.
Thank you so much for your help

Hi

I'm also descended from the 1785 Roderick Fraser.

There was a Roderick Fraser born in Dingwall in c.1719 who was transported to the West Indies in 1747 following Culloden. I suspect he was the [grand]father of our Roderick who comes to Portsmouth in the early 1800s.

See Directory of Scots Banished to the American Plantations, 1650-1775 on ancestry

Thanks Kate. I never thought of looking there.
I'm sure you're probably right.
The only other way he could have got there was if was born there because his father was a mariner who's wife accompanied him.
This did happen occasionally I have someone in my other tree who was born in Australia although all the rest of his family and siblings were born in London.
Thanks for the help
