Gills Farm Rivington / Bain, Yates families

Hi Lee

- Isaac Bain was born about 1806 at Rivington to John Bain and mary Taylor
- Isaac married Alice Yates on 5 Oct 1835 at Bolton-Le-Moors.  Alice was born about 1808 in Rivington however I dont know who her parents were
- The 1841 & 1851 census shows Isaac and Alice living at Gills Farm
- By 1861 Isaac had passed away and Alice is shown as a widow and farmer living at Gills Farm
- In 1871 Alice is shown living with her brother at Charnock Heath.  I'm in the process of trying to find out who was at Gills Farm in 1871.
- Any help you can give is very much appreciated.

gills farm/ gillsbrook is quite a way down from the pike closer to rivington lane.
living at gillsbrook cottage as it is called  in 1871 are william taylor aged 46 born sharples  which is posh end of bolton, his wife ellen age 40 born chorley and their daughter ann. e. 16 born bolton.

kept me busy this one, not many yates on 1841 census up rivvy.
got an alice yates christened 28/9/1807 rivington father john.
got who i think could be father john on 1841 census living at old cates with wife ann and a lot of children.
brother james who alice later lives with at heath charnock 1815 is there .
living 2 doors away is abraham bains and family.
also a niece of alice marries a william bain and they are living next door to the taylors at gillsbrook in 1881.
abraham bain lived at sweetloves cottage which was actually a pretty big house ,i was rooting round the ruins a few weeks ago.
old cates was demolished but the wooded area around there is known as old kates dingle, its on the maps.
anyhow i will stop rambling now will have another gander tomorrow see what turns up.

Isaac Bain is buried with Alice at Rivington Church and they have a gravestone:

In Memory of
Isaac Bain of Rivington
Who died February 19th 1861 Aged 55 years
He was for a many years the
Respected sexton of this place
Also Alice his beloved wife
Who died May 12th 1888 Aged 80 years

Let me know if you want me to check my database (of gravestones, births, burials) for other Bains/Banes, Taylors or Yates/Yeats.  I do recall, and can check for you, that a couple of male Yates were the "purported fathers" of illegitimate children as they were all recorded in the church registers by Rev Sutcliffe who seemed to clamp down on illegitimacy. 

No matter what, you simply must visit this delightful churchyard as there are many people of these names buried there.  Gilsbrook House is still there and has recently been used as a children's care home.

Hi Lynne,

Just checked the graveyard register for Rivington Church for you.  There is the 'burial' register and a 'graveyard' register.  The graveyard register is split into plots, who owned the plot, who's buried there etc and can often give more info than the burial register.

So, with John and Mary Bane (see post above) we can confirm they lived at Gills and here are the others buried, but have no mention on the stone:

Phew!  Didn't they cram them in?  Clearly they are all related and the plots were bought by John and Mary, so assuming they are the 'head' of the family then the rest are children, grandchildren or possibly other close relations.

There are quite a few other Bains, so let me know if you want me to check other names.

Hi Tipps,

Thankyou so much for all that information.  I really to appreciate your help.  I have been able to 'fill in some of the blanks' which is really great. 

I don't have any information on the Yeates/Yates or Taylor families other than  John Bain married Mary Taylor abt 1782 and their son Isaac married Alice Yates abt 1835.

I would very much appreciate any information especially births/parents etc for Mary and Alice.

We're so excited about our trip in Aug and are in the process of looking to book accommodation in Rivington so we can spend a few days there.

Hi Lynne,

I've done some more trawling for you.  Alice Yates was baptised 28 Sep 1807 daughter of John.  There are actually 2 couples called John and Ann Yates.  So, we've established the link to the correct one through Alice living with her brother James in 1881, and the relation of the burial plots.  1841, 1851 (Yater on census) and 1861 John is living at Old Cates (Kates) with some of their children.

Interestingly 2 plots away from the above gravestone is the grave of 3 James', but they have no stone.  In the plot is :

Not having as much success with the Bains family.  I've found:

John Bain baptised Rivington Church 13 Jan 1760, son of John of Anderton. 
John Bain (of Rivington) married Mary Taylor (of Rivington) 22 Dec 1782 at Rivington Church
Possible baptism: Mary Taylor baptised Lee Chapel, Horwich 17 Sep 1767 daughter of William (and possibly Ann), abode Rivington

I do have some gravestones for Taylors, but they would have been born c.1790's onwards.  I'm not sure whether they are Mary's family, so I'll not bombard you with extra info until you're ready for the onslaught!
