Restore and date please for Griffiths and Griffiths
« on: Friday 11 December 09 02:41 GMT (UK) »
Hello photo restorers and daters. I hope you are all well in the lead up for Christmas and are looking forward to the holiday season. I know I am!

A few weeks ago I was sent the following photograph in a batch of five and I was wondering if anybody could perhaps tell me abit about the clothes these two brothers are wearing. I am trying to establish whether the man on the right is my gt gt grandfather Thomas J Griffiths, who died in 1925 aged 56. I know the man holding...whatever it is he is holding!...is his brother Arthur, born 1873.

Any ideas on a date or maybe a quick edit to erase the fold at the top of the picture would be most welcome and greatly appreciated. You guys do fantastic work and deserve more credit than you get!

Regards and Merry Christmas,

Reayboy :)

Hmm...not much that's dateable in this photo, but as it's in a fairly modern format I'd say slightly pre-1925 is a pretty good bet.

Any chance of a higher resolution scan, say 300 dpi? Also, with a much higher resolution scan of the thing Arthur is holding, 600 dpi or better (draw a box around the object and scan just it) we might be able to tell what it is. Could it be a monkey wearing a flowered shower cap? ;D

Cheers,

Would only be guessing at a date too sorry Reayboy though would say the men look somewhere around 50yrs  :) mare

Looks like he's holding a bundle of sticks of Rhubarb with some parts of the leaves still on.

Hi there
I agree with the previous observer regarding rhubarb but initially I had wondered whether there was a creature being held below like a polecat or a ferret. In the background there seems to be evidence of organised planting.....alotment type ground. Could the background be 'Sugarloaf' Mt close to Abergavenny and not too far from Brecon. It looks like early 1920s and both men have matching 'Dai' caps ...far more common in the valleys than hats.
Best regards
