Deaths before 1855
« on: Thursday 10 December 09 22:44 GMT (UK) »
Hope someone can help.
According to family history passed down I have a family that moved from Ireland to Glasgow around the 1820's.
I have searched Scotland's People for deaths and the 1841 census. The parents must have died before 1855 and 1841 plus I am 99% sure they would have been Catholic.
All we know is they moved to Glasgow.
Any suggestions on where to go next would be grateful. It's a big ask as we don't know what part of Glasgow they would have lived in.
The family I am looking for is James and Kate McDavitt. James occupation was a tailor.
Their son John was also a tailor born about 1821 Ireland. Unfortunately on certificates we have for John states he was born in Ireland, the family moved to Glasgow when he was a young boy so the family story goes. John left Glasgow for Liverpool where I have him on the 1851 census. He later moved to Australia then to New Zealand.
Regards

Hi Sue

I noticed that on the 1851, John's 2 children were born in Birkenhead (which is on the Wirral).  I don't know if you have seen the marriage of John McDevitt in March quarter 1846 in Wirral district. There are 2 listed.  If you click possible spouses on the 2nd one there is a Catherine McCarter.

In 1841 Glasgow there is a Mary Campbell, 45, with James Mc Divet, 45 Labourer and John McDivet,15, plus other names.  The address is 92 Bridgegate  This is in the centre of Glasgow.  This could be your family.  If so, it looks like the mother has died.  James must have died after 1841 unless he moved with his son.

He may have died in England.

Not sure whether you are aware, on the 1841 census ages were rounded up or down to the nearest 5 years.  John was 29 in 1851 so would have been around 19 in 1841.  I would have thought he would be listed as 20 but they may have rounded down to 15.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes did find the marriage and ordered the certificate.
It is possible to be our John.
Though the spelling is only one letter different not unusual.
On the certificate I was lucky they put the age and not full age. He was 25 so age and occupation correct.
Fathers name different though. The father was Patrick and not James.
I have not been able to find a John and Patrick with a mother possibly Kate combination on the 1841 census either.
It was interesting to note that John and catherine married in the Church of Eng. and not a Catholic marriage. Yet his children here in NZ were catholic.
We are sure that John deserted his wife and three children in Eng.
He leaves Eng. for Aussie and the gold fields, where he meets and has children with another woman. He does not marry her until some twenty years later.
I wondered if he waited until he heard his first wife had died.

I have never been able to locate Catherine or the boys. John, James and Daniel were born in Eng. and are on the 1851 census with Catherine and John.
His children born in Aussie and NZ also have the same names as those born in England.
Regards
Sue

Sue,

Given that they were Roman Catholics there might be some record of them in the Scottish Catholic Archives.
See http://www.scottishcatholicarchives.org.uk/

Catholic Parish Registers Births and Baptisms have recently gone online at ScotlandsPeople.

Deaths, burials and funerals are "coming soon".

Hi there,
Many thanks. Tried it over the Christmas period. As always family I am looking for are not mentioned.
I will just have to be patient and wait until they have it all online.
Mine will be in the ten % that is not there.
Happy New Year
Sue

Hi Sue,
Happy New Year!
Just in case you don't alreqdy know; the name McDevitt often became McDaid/McDade, especially after leaving Ireland.
My great-grandfather had a sister who married John McDevitt  in Ramelton, Co Donegal, they had 3 children born there, all registered as McDevitt. They then moved to Scotland and had 3 more children here, all registered qs McDade. Then they moved to Canada, where their name was McDade.
After making enquiries in Donegal, I found that this was common practice.
It must be a Gaelic-English translation.
Good luck!
