1901 census - how do I find an address?
« on: Thursday 10 December 09 12:09 GMT (UK) »
How do I find out who was living at a certain address at the time of the census? I am a member of Ancestry but I only appear to be able to search on someone's name. In the 1891 census George Mercer and his family were living at Griggs Farm, Headcorn, Kent. I think by 1901 the mother had died, the children were farmed out to relatives and there is no trace of George (b abt 1837 Headcorn) I believe Grigg Farm to be in enumeration district 4 of Headcorn, but don't know how to access it. It would be interesting to see who is living at the farm at that time.

Ancestry isn't too good for addresses, but Findmypast has address searching.  Can't see a specific 'Griggs Farm' from a quick look, but there is a Grigg Lane with four properties listed in enumeration district 4, one of which is headed by a farmer called James Field: RG13/772/52/5
Kelly, Birkenhead & Co. Kildare
Marshall, Luton & area
Reid, Co. Kildare & Dublin
Cox, Barnack Northamptonshire
Edwards, Pagham, Sussex & area
Scott, Roxburghshire & Perthshire
Mitchell, Warwickshire
Savage, Hampshire

Hi Trunkybun (and Richard!),

You can't do address searches easily on ancestry.
Registration distict 4 is here
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=7814&iid=KENRG13_770_772-0527

This however could be a good reason why you can't find George ...

Death registration
George Mercer age 58
Mar 1896
Hollingbourne 2a 470

Oh thank you for looking. It is definately listed as Griggs Farm in the 1891. Ah so I will have to set myself up with credits for Findmypast then.

Looks like the name may have changed to Grigg Pit Farm by 1901.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Cheers Tati, Nick and Richard!

Thanks to the link to the census I can see that although the family name :) at Griggs Farm had changed to Chantler - it was still in the family. Curiosity satisfied!

Hi, sorry to jump in on your query, but I have a query myself regarding Griggs Farm, Headcorn.  I am a Griggs and apparently we owned the farm back in the 1500s, one Roger Griggs.  I just wondered, as you say you lived there once if you know any of the history of the farm as I have only just found this out and would love to know anything about the farm.
Regards
Gini

I have a 1950s Sharps toffee tin showing Griggs farm at Headcorn. It was made by Sharps,  a Kentish firm. !
