Roman Catholic Church Mossend Bellshill
« on: Wednesday 09 December 09 20:40 GMT (UK) »
In one of my great grandparents marriage certificates it states where married 'Roman Catholic Church' Mossend.  This was in 1920, why would it state that rather than the name of the church.  Where would've it been ?

Hi djcrtoye,

No idea why it would have said it but its probably The Holy Family Parish Church which is still going today in Mossend.

I just found a marriage certificate for my Great Grandmother's Sister that listed the place of marriage as "The Roman Catholic Chapel, Mossend".  I've sent an email to Holy Family's website to verify they are one and the same.

100% it is The Holy family. The parish was founded in 1868 and the present church was built in 1884. The nearest Catholic church to Mossend is The Sacred Heart in Bellshill but if it states "Mossend" on your certificate it is definitely The holy Family. It is a beautiful church, very well maintained by Father Jim Grant, the present incumbent.
The Catholic church in general was very rarely, if ever, mentioned by specific name in those days, just as the officiating priest was barely recognised by his proper title, usually "J Bloggs, CC" or some such description. Other denominations usually fared better.

Thanks for the reply & info.  I looked at the HISTORY on their website and pretty much determined the same, but nice to have verification.
