Albert Edward Snowball - help required
« on: Wednesday 09 December 09 18:58 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for a bit of a breakthrough with information on an ancestor that is seemingly impossible to trace.

Albert Edward Snowball, the sixth son of John (my g.g. grandfather) and Sarah Snowball was born in June 1863 in Lambeth, at that time in the county of Surrey.

The 1871 Census shows him as a 7-year old, living with his family at 2, Salisbury Terrace, Willesden.

In the 1881 Census, Albert Snowball is recorded incorrectly as Albert E. Soucobale. This is a transcription error from the census form. Albert, then aged 17, is recorded as a carpenter, residing at Fern Villa, Hampstead.

From hereon, Albert does not appear on further census returns and no other reference to him is to be found, save Albert Edward Snowball being mentioned, along with his siblings, in his father John Snowball’s will of 1895 and a codicil to the will in 1899, which does not alter the previous arrangement in Albert's favour. I'm therefore assuming he's alive in 1899 but just where is a mystery.

Anyone with the time and a better idea than me, as to his possible whereabouts after 1881, would be bestowed with gratitude.

Steve

There is an Annie SNOWBALL, birth Dec qtr 1893 Wandsworth, who is more than likely the Annie SNOWBALL, niece, aged 7 with Robert and Sarah and his family in Battersea in 1901. Probably a daughter of Edward Albert and Annie.

Annie SNOWBALL death Dec qtr 1893, Wandsworth, aged 29. Probably died in childbirth.

No sign of Albert Edward / Edward Albert in 1891 or 1901 that I can see.

Hi Ian

Thanks for the information and the time spent on this one.
I also haven't yet been able to find Albert Edward on the 1891 or 1901 census.

His father, John Snowball, was a builder from Northumberland and has been recorded as such on official documentation up to his death in 1901, apart from his marriage certificate where he is a carpenter journeyman.

I see no reason why John Snowball would be recorded as an engineer, so I'm not entirely convinced the Edward Albert in your research is the same as my Albert Edward. Also, the witness, Frederick Richard Snowball is not a known contemporary relative of Albert Edward.
Finally, the majority of John Snowball's sons appear to have entered the building trade, either as carpenters, architects or builders. The profession of a tailor seems a bit detached from that of his siblings!

Hi

1911 census index has an Edward Snowball aged 44 with a Rhoda 38 and a Violet aged 8 all in Wandsworth registration district that would cover Battersea. He seems to track back along with Robert his older brother and Frederick Richard his younger brother to parents John an engine fitter born Newcastle upon Tyne and wife Elizabeth born Lambeth.

Births Dec 1864
SNOWBALL  Edward Albert     Runcorn  8a 180

This is certainly not mine but many thanks for the input.

Hi Valda

I appreciate that. Any help, whether eliminating people or finding them is useful, as far as I'm concerned. This little brickwall has been niggling away for a number of years now and I'm no further forward. I thought the 1901 and then the 1911 Census would reveal something once released but not the case. He'll show up somewhere!

Hi

You could try tracking him through the Death Duty Registers held at The National Archives, though the later ones have to be order because they are not kept on site. See the research guide for the details the registers hold.
