Mobbs of Hethe and Stratton Audley
« on: Tuesday 08 December 09 11:18 GMT (UK) »
Prudence Mobbs married Edward Bunce 14th June 1773 at Stratton Audley.  Prudence was baptised 1st September 1745 at Hethe and is the daughter of William Mobbs and Mary .  She was one of seven children.  Can anyone confirm that her parents, William and Mary are the same William Mobbs and Mary Phillips of Hethe as i do not have a marriage for them.  Thankyou.

I think we share this Mobbs family and also Bunce. I am also unable to find a marriage between Willaim Mobbs and Mary - I have no idea where the name Phillips comes from although it is included in a number of online trees. My husband is descended from Prudence's son William whose wife was also an unknown Mary.

Welcome to RootsChat Genghissian.

Whilst this thread is from 2009, Opal has been active on here recently so should receive notification of your post.

Not related to the marriage, however of possible interest: William MOBBS of "Heath" contributed to an almanac published in 1748, with calculations for upcoming eclipses.

Title: "The gentleman's diary, or the mathematical repository; an almanack for the year of our Lord 1748. Being Bissextile or Leap-Year. Containing many useful and entertaining Particulars, peculiarly adapted to the ingenious Gentlemen engaged in the Study and Practice of the mathematicks. The Eighth Almanack ever publish'd of this Kind"
Publication Date: 1748
Imprint London : printed for the Company of Stationers 1748.

Thank you, that is interesting. It certainly sounds like Prudence's father who was baptising children in Hethe from 1732-45 though it also sounds a step up in social status - or rather Prudence married down. I've had Prudence in the tree for about 30 years but only just made the connection to her baptism hence the late response to Opal's post.
Thank you

I still have not found a marriage for William and Mary Mobbs/Mobbes!  William is buried in Hethe on 25th August 1776 and Mary is buried at Hethe on 10th November 1745.   I have currently 5 dna matches on my Ancestry tree with descendants of each of them.
Their first child christened in Hethe, I have as Elizabeth, chr. 3rd January 1731 (1732 in the PR, when the year went to the end of March).  Their second child, Mary was chr. 16th April 1733, Hethe.
I believe that William Mobbs was chr. at Whitfield, Northamptonshire on the 27th August 1706.  His mother was named Prudence.  Hence why I believe this to be correct as my line descends from William and Mary's daughter, Prudence, probably named after her grandmother?
Therefore William and Mary's marriage potentially is 1728 to 1731 but to date no success.
I have Mary as nee Phillips on my tree.  I believe her to be the Mary Phillips chr. on 3rd September 1711 at Chipping Norton with Over Norton, her father is named as John.  It took me a few years to accept that this was most likely her but I always hope in these instances that there will be primary source evidence eventually found to 100% confirm or not?
Whitfield, Hethe and Chipping Norton are relatively close on a map when considering the geographical facts.
I hope this helps.

I have re-read your post and looked back on my tree.  I descend from Edward Bunce 1783 - 1852, chr. 13th April 1783 at Stratton Audley.  I believe that William is his brother, chr. 29th January 1775 at Stratton Audley.
If so I believe he married Mary Edmonds on the 6th September 1798 at Ludgershall, Buckinghamshire.  They lived in Stratton Audley and Mary is in the 1841 census.

Thank you - I have seen the Mary Edmonds marriage and wondered about it - I'll revisit and see if I can convince myself. Part of the problem is not knowing that area of the country and having to check all the time how close places are to each other.

I belive William Mobbs bapt 1706 to be the son of Joseph Mobbs and Prudence nee Warner who married at Burton Dassett, Warwickshire on 18 May 1702. Helpfully he is decribed as "of the parish of Whitfield". Her surname is a little unclear as the downstoke of an "f" obscures whether it is Warner or Warder - I tend to favour the former. There seem to be at least 2 siblings Joseph baptised 1714 and Thomas baptised 1716, but surely probably some more between William and Joseph.

I then have Joseph as the son of William & Joan Mobbs baptised Whitfield 3 Aug 1682.

I have the sources attached to an Ancestry tree "Plant-Gillingham 03-02 2025".

I have the same - I think it is Warner as the d's in the PR all seem to have a left hand slope to the upper line of the d.
The Mobbs and the Bunce's straddle the villages bordering Oxon and Bucks, I have found.  But when looked at on a map they are not too far apart.  Marsh Gibbon is an early Bunce village.
